A 30 kmph speed limit proposed by MIROS
KUALA LUMPUR: Things might get serious (slow) at the road safety front, as the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) has proposed a 30 kmph speed limit. If approved, the new limit will be followed by drivers/riders moving around the village, city, residential, and urban areas - reported Free Malaysia Today.
The said proposal is part of the national road safety plan from 2021 to 2030 and follows the global ministerial conference 2020 of which Malaysia was a part. The latter even resulted in 18 new road safety resolutions and 80 ministers from their respective nations pledged to halve road fatalities by 2030. Furthermore, the 30 kmph speed limit will allow the riders to share the road completely.

Currently just a suggestion, the proposed 30 kmph speed limit will be put in place once it gets finalised by JPJ and the Ministry of Works before being presented to the Ministry of Transport.
Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim, Director-General of MIROS said that the road safety institute will engage several stakeholders like the road transport department, public works department, police, local councils, and other relevant units.

Also, the 30 kmph speed limit will enable pedestrians and riders to safely mix road traffic and enable the community to build a livable, and healthy space.
