Dunlop is back in Malaysia, and it wants to be the value pick for your next set of tyres
KUALA LUMPUR: Dunlop held a media briefing today to lay out its comeback plan for Malaysia, and the pitch is refreshingly simple.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Is Dunlop still available in Malaysia?
Yes. Dunlop relaunched in Malaysia in 2026 under new distributor Toyotsu Binter Malaysia, after Sumitomo Rubber Industries bought back the Dunlop trademark rights from Continental Tyre Malaysia in 2025. The brand now has over 200 dealers nationwide.Where are Dunlop tyres made?
Most Dunlop tyres sold in Malaysia are currently made in Japan, with additional production from Sumitomo Rubber's factory in Thailand. What Dunlop tyres are available in Malaysia?
The range covers the SP Touring R1 for small cars, Blue Response TG for everyday passenger cars, SP Sport Maxx 060+ flagship performance tyre, Sport Maxx LUX premium comfort tyre, and the Grandtrek PT5, AT5 and R/T01 for SUVs and pickups, plus the upcoming e.Sport Maxx for EVs.This is a brand that supplies tyres straight from the factory to Toyota, Lexus, Isuzu, Mazda and even Leapmotor, and it now wants everyday Malaysian drivers to extend that same trust when the time comes to replace their worn rubber.
After all, if the carmakers themselves are confident enough to fit Dunlops at the factory, that says something about the tyres.
If you have been wondering where Dunlop went, here is the short version. The brand's trademark rights in Malaysia previously sat with Continental Tyre Malaysia, and in 2025, Sumitomo Rubber Industries bought back all exclusive rights to the Dunlop name here.
Distribution is now handled by Toyotsu Binter Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between Singapore's Binter & Co and Toyota Tsusho Asia Pacific, with Sumitomo's engineering behind the products. In other words, Dunlop in Malaysia has been reset, with new owners of the name, a new distributor, and a new range.
The rebuild is moving quickly. Since May 2026, Dunlop's dealer network has grown by more than 30 percent, from around 150 outlets to over 200 nationwide, backed by dealer training and a 12 plus 6 months warranty programme.
Why the timing makes sense
Malaysia's total industry volume crossed 800,000 units for the second year running in 2025, with 820,752 vehicles sold. Every one of those cars will eventually need replacement tyres, and that segment already makes up around 63 percent of Malaysia's tyre market, with roughly 5 percent annual growth projected over the next five years.
The mix of vehicles is changing too. SUV sales climbed 13 per cent last year while battery EVs surged 78 per cent, which means heavier cars, larger wheel sizes, instant torque and a growing demand for quiet cabins.
Dunlop's argument is that Malaysian buyers are no longer choosing tyres on price tag alone, but on total value across the tyre's life, which covers wear, fuel efficiency, wet grip and cost of ownership.
"Motorists are looking for products that deliver quality, safety and performance, but they also expect genuine value. That is where we see Dunlop's opportunity. Our ambition is to establish Dunlop as an emerging premium brand by making premium performance accessible to more Malaysian motorists," said Marcus Lim, Managing Director of Toyotsu Binter Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
That phrase, emerging premium, is doing a lot of work here. Read between the lines and the target is clear: performance that competes with the established premium names like Michelin, Continental and Bridgestone, at pricing closer to the strong value players Malaysians already know.
Official retail pricing was not announced at the briefing, and will vary by size and dealer, but expect the entry ranges to sit in accessible territory while the flagship Sport Maxx line goes after the premium segment.
The elephant in the room came up during the Q&A session, when a member of the media pointed out that Malaysians are slowly warming up to cheap Chinese tyres, and asked how Dunlop feels about that.
Marcus took it in stride. "We're glad that Malaysians are trying new things out, and we hope they also try Dunlop tyres, as we will present some value tyres," he said. No panic, no dismissiveness, just a quiet confidence that once price-conscious buyers put a set of SP Touring R1s or Blue Response TGs against the budget imports, the maths on wear life and wet grip will speak for itself.
Origin is part of that argument too. For now, most Dunlop tyres sold in Malaysia are made in Japan, with additional production coming out of Sumitomo's factory in Thailand. In a market where made in Japan still carries real weight with buyers, that is a card the cheap imports cannot play.
A tyre for every Malaysian driveway
The lineup covers pretty much every car you see on Malaysian roads. The SP Touring R1 handles small and medium cars in 12 to 16 inch sizes, so Axia, Bezza, Saga and Myvi owners are covered.
The Blue Response TG steps things up for everyday passenger cars and compact SUVs, claiming 50 percent longer life, 25 percent better handling stability and 10 percent better wet grip than the SP Sport LM705 it replaces.
For SUV and pickup owners, the Grandtrek family runs from the road biased PT5 to the all terrain AT5 and the aggressive R/T01, the last one aimed squarely at the Hilux, Triton, Ranger and Jimny crowd.
At the top sits the SP Sport Maxx 060+, Dunlop's flagship performance tyre in sizes up to 22 inches, with an EU Label A grade for wet grip across all sizes, while the Sport Maxx LUX focuses on comfort and quietness for premium SUVs using Dunlop's Silent Core noise absorbing foam technology.
The one to watch is the e.Sport Maxx, an EV specific tyre arriving soon that claims 11.1 percent more driving range per kilowatt compared to previous models, which works out to roughly 53 km of extra range from an 80 kWh battery.
With Malaysia's EV population growing fast, an EV tyre from an OEM supplier to Leapmotor is a credible proposition.
Dunlop's history here is genuinely deep. It became the first tyre manufacturer to establish local production in Malaysia back in 1963, and Dunlop tyres were a household name among Malaysians through the 1970s.
Sumitomo, which has carried the Dunlop torch since acquiring the British Dunlop Rubber Company's European tyre assets in 1985, says the brand's future rests on next generation technology.
"Today, our focus extends beyond conventional tyre development. We are investing in next-generation technologies that enhance energy efficiency, improve wet-weather grip, reduce rolling resistance and cabin noise, while exploring intelligent tyre technologies that will support the future of connected and electrified mobility," said Takehiko Asai, Managing Director of Sumitomo Rubber Asia (Tyre) Pte Ltd.
For Malaysian buyers, the practical takeaway is this: there is now another serious option on the shelf when your tyre shop quotes you for a new set, one with OEM credentials, a growing nationwide network, and a stated mission to undercut the premium establishment on value.
Whether Dunlop Malaysia can convert factory fitment trust into replacement sales in 2026 is the story worth following.
