GWM Wey 80 MPV coming to Malaysia, here’s what to expect

KUALA LUMPUR: Great Wall Motors has recently appointed Roslan Abdullah (former Deputy CEO of Proton) as its Chief Operating Officer, indicating the brand’s strong commitment to becoming a long-term player in Malaysia’s automotive landscape. 

The company’s recent actions also reinforce this commitment. It launched the full-size hybrid SUV, the Tank 500, at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025 last month, and is now gearing up to introduce a plug-in hybrid luxury MPV, the Wey 80 (known as Wey Gaoshan in China). It is to be noted that Wey is GWM’s premium sub-brand, focused on luxury, high-tech SUVs and MPVs.

The upcoming electrified people hauler made its first official appearance in Malaysia at KLIMS 2024 in left-hand-drive form. However, it was recently spotted in right-hand-drive guise while testing on local roads along the Karak Highway.

That means, the GWM Wey 80 will soon be entering the luxury MPV segment in Malaysia, flooded with several exciting names like the Toyota Alphard, Toyota Vellfire, Zeekr 009, Xpeng X9, Denza D9, and GAC M8.

The Wey 80 (Gaoshan) comes in three versions in China - Gaoshan 7 (short wheelbase) Gaoshan 8 (standard wheelbase), and Gaoshan 9 (long wheelbase), available in 6- and 7-seater configurations.

In Malaysia, the automaker previewed the short-wheelbase version at the Kuala Lumpur event, which measures 5,045 mm in length, 1,960 mm in width and 1,900 mm in height and spans a 3,085 mm wheelbase. However, the spied version seems to be either a standard wheelbase or the long-wheelbase version; the latter stretches to an impressive 5,410 mm in length, with a generous wheelbase of 3,275 mm.

The front is dominated by a large radiator grille with intricate detailing, giving the vehicle a bold, avant-garde appearance.
