Meet Toyota Lunar Cruiser, the one built for the moon
KUALA LUMPUR: Toyota, in collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), is working on a fuel cell vehicle technology to go on the moon.
It seems like the Japanese automaker is not satisfied with just conquering the automotive landscape here on the blue planet and wants to fly even high.
The brand is consistently achieving the highest global sales numbers, just saying.
Toyota has named its moon exploration vehicle - the Lunar Cruiser, and it instantly reminds us of the brand's iconic SUV, the Land Cruiser. And we hope the moon-centric cruiser is a success like the land-version.
The JAXA x Toyota Lunar Criser will be manned, and it is being built in the spirit of "I will definitely come back home."
Let's now check out the different development phases Toyota & JAXA has planned for the Lunar Cruiser -
- Currently, the JAXA x Toyota Lunar Cruiser is in the development phase. Considering the harsh environment, the exploration team will face up there; both the Toyota and JAXA want to ensure the best quality reliability, and durability for the rover.
- By the end of 2020, Lunar Cruiser's driving simulations well be conducted confirming its heat displacement and power performance. Also, the interior layout arrangement and trial production of tyres will be done this year
- The design and engineering of the actual spacecraft will begin from 2024
- By 2029, the production-spec Lunar Cruiser will be revealed to the public
- Lastly, the manned lunar exploration is scheduled for 2030
So, within a decade Toyota will wrap-up its first-ever lunar project, that's something awe-inspiring and challenging as well.
