GWM WEY G9 Hi4 HEV bookings open in Malaysia – 358 PS, 782 Nm, no plug-in charging

KUALA LUMPUR: GWM Malaysia has opened bookings for the WEY G9 Hi4 HEV, adding a conventional hybrid option alongside its existing plug-in hybrid MPV. Prices and full specifications are still under wraps, with those details due at the model’s official Malaysian introduction.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What engine and transmission does the WEY G9 Hi4 HEV use?

It combines a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, two electric motors, a four-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) and a 1.67 kWh hybrid battery.
  • How much power does the WEY G9 Hi4 HEV produce?

GWM quotes a combined output of 358 PS and 782 Nm of torque.
  • The main difference is straightforward: the HEV does not need external charging. For buyers interested in the G9 but without somewhere convenient to plug in, this version offers another powertrain choice.

Its arrival comes as the existing WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV approaches 2,000 deliveries nationwide, according to GWM Malaysia.

The GWM WEY G9 Hi4 HEV pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with two electric motors, a four-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) and a 1.67 kWh hybrid battery. Combined output is rated at 358 PS and 782 Nm of torque.

It also uses GWM’s Hi4, short for Hybrid Intelligent 4WD, giving the MPV four-wheel drive. GWM says the system combines four-wheel-drive capability with the efficiency of a two-wheel-drive setup, although the announcement does not provide a fuel consumption figure to back up that comparison.

The smaller hybrid battery supports a setup that does away with the need to plug in. Owners simply refuel with petrol, making it a more straightforward proposition for those who want a hybrid without working charging stops or home charging into their routine.

GWM has also outlined some of the cabin equipment, including Nappa leather upholstery, active noise cancellation, a premium sound system and driver assistance technologies. The G9 retains a three-row layout, although the full Malaysian equipment list has yet to be announced.

“The success of the GWM WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV reflects the confidence Malaysian customers have placed in our premium MPV. With the introduction of the HEV, we are building on that success by offering another way to experience First Class. The new HEV combines the performance, efficiency and convenience of our advanced hybrid technology with the comfort and safety that customers have come to expect from WEY,” said Stan Li Hao, Managing Director, Commercial Operations, GWM Malaysia.

With both HEV and PHEV versions in the line-up, buyers will have a choice between a hybrid that requires no external charging and a plug-in alternative. Which makes more sense will depend on their driving patterns, access to charging and, once announced, the price difference.

“Customers have different driving needs and preferences. By offering both PHEV and HEV options, we are giving them the flexibility to choose what works best for their lifestyle. For customers who prefer the convenience of a hybrid without external charging, the HEV provides another compelling option, while delivering the First Class experience that the GWM WEY G9 is known for,” said Roslan Abdullah, Chief Operating Officer, GWM Malaysia.

Bookings for the WEY G9 Hi4 HEV are now available through authorised GWM dealerships nationwide. GWM Malaysia has yet to confirm its price or a specific launch date, so buyers will have to wait for the official introduction to assess how it stacks up against the existing PHEV.
