New MG S5 COM variant launched in Malaysia - 340 km range, starts from RM 104k

KUALA LUMPUR: SAIC Motor Malaysia has introduced a new entry-level variant for the MG S5 EV, the COM (Comfort), making the electric SUV more accessible to a wider range of Malaysian customers. The latest variant retains the EV’s core strengths in performance, safety, and technology and is offered as a locally assembled model, alongside the existing LUX variant.

MG S5 COM: Price and launch promo

The base-spec S5 COM is priced at RM 104,468 (on-the-road without insurance), almost RM 11k less than the top-spec S5 LUX at RM 117,528.

The price includes a seven-year or 150,000km vehicle warranty, an eight-year or 180,000km battery pack warranty and an eight-year or 160,000km Motor Control Unit (MCU) warranty.  

MG Motor Malaysia offers a RM 3,000 cash rebate and a complimentary wallbox charger as part of the launch promo.

MG S5 COM: Key highlights 

• The MG S5 COM is powered by a rear-wheel-drive motor that generates a maximum power of 170 PS and a peak torque of 250 Nm. 
• As for the battery pack, it comes with a 49 kWh unit, which offers up to 340 km of range (WLTP) and supports 7 kW AC and 120 kW DC charging. 

• In terms of specifications, you get an Active grille system, automatic LED headlights with LED DRLs, LED tail lights, power-folding side mirrors and 17-inch alloy wheels.
• Inside, the EV is equipped with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, 12.8-inch centre infotainment unit, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 4-speaker sound system, Single-zone automatic climate control, fabric upholstery, a 6-way manually adjustable driver seat and a 4-way manually adjustable front passenger seat.

• The safety package includes seven airbags and MG Pilot ADAS 2.5 advanced driver assistance system, featuring technologies such as Traffic Jam Assist and Intelligent Cruise Control. 

MG S5 COM vs MG S5 LUX

In comparison, the MG S5 LUX runs on a more potent drivetrain that delivers 203 PS and 350 Nm. It is packed with a bigger 62 kWh battery unit, with up to 446 km of range and 150 kW DC charging capability.

The top-spec model also offers additional comfort and convenience features, including leatherette seats with MG’s signature perforated design, ventilated front seats, power-adjustable front seats, a heated leather steering wheel, bigger 18-inch alloy wheels, panoramic sunroof, and hands-free powered tailgate. 

Emory Qi, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia, said the introduction of the MGS5  reflects the company’s commitment to making electric mobility more attainable without compromising on quality or the driving experience.

With the introduction of the MGS5 EV COM, we are making rear-wheel drive B-segment SUV ownership more accessible to a broader group of Malaysians. We believe this new variant offers exceptional value and allows more customers to experience the performance, technology and quality that define the MG brand,” said Qi.
