TEKS1M announced to revise the taxi fares soon, claims SPAD

Kuala Lumpur: The new taxi service in Malaysia, TEKS1M is aiming to set new baselines on vehicle standards, driver quality and operating principles. Few months back, the taxi industry received a boost with the introduction of Toyota Innova and gold and brown-painted Proton Exora MPV's as part of the Teksi 1 Malaysia fleet. Now, the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) has announced to cut down the taxi fares before the year's end.

As reported from The Sun Daily, SPAD chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar was found saying that the revised taxi fares will be regulated in charge of public transport within the next two months. In addition, he also gave hints regarding the inclusion of a new sedan type car to join the two currently available MPVs.

However, it has been seen from earlier reports that TEKS1M cabs operation in different areas are losing out on business, not just to transportation network companies such as Uber and GrabCar, but also to their budget counterparts. Higher fares are the primary reason why the service is being shunned by consumers. So now, the chairman has decided to make some necessary changes in the price that can bring the company a profitable amount of business.

If taxi fares cut down to a considerable amount, it will be a boost to the public transport with spacious and better ride comfort MPVs. Although, it is hard to give strong competition to the budget taxis that holds significant characteristics against TEKS1M service (for one simple reason – they are cheaper).

According to a survey report, the flagfall rate for a TEKS1M Exora is RM4, with the tariff being 30 sen for every 200 metres travelled, while the flagfall rate for a budget taxi is RM3 and the tariff, 25 sen for the same distance. There is also a time-based charged, rated at RM0.30 for every 36 seconds of travel. Whereas, in a budget taxi, the flagfall charge is RM3, with a RM0.25 sen per 200 metres charge, and RM0.25 sen per every 36 seconds.
