Mercedes-Benz electric C-Class revealed, 10 things you need to know

Mercedes-Benz electric C-Class revealed, 10 things you need to know

KUALA LUMPUR: Mercedes-Benz has finally taken one of its most important nameplates into the EV era with the all-new electric C-Class, and it is not easing itself in either.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the range of the Mercedes-Benz electric C-Class?

Mercedes-Benz says the C 400 4MATIC electric offers up to 762 km of WLTP range.
  • How fast can the Mercedes-Benz electric C-Class charge?

Mercedes says the car can add up to 325 km of WLTP range in 10 minutes and supports DC fast charging of up to 330 kW.
  • Rather than a mild, conservative transition, the German brand is pitching this as the most powerful and sportiest C-Class yet, while also claiming long-distance ability, a more advanced cabin and the kind of ride comfort usually reserved for larger, pricier models.

At debut, the headline car is the Mercedes-Benz C 400 4MATIC electric and the global reveal gives a pretty clear idea of where Mercedes is taking the mid-size luxury EV fight next.

    1. This is the first proper all-electric C-Class

This is not a mild hybrid C-Class with a bigger battery, and it is not a side project wearing familiar badges. Mercedes-Benz is presenting this as the first fully electric C-Class, built to carry the same role the model has always played in its line-up, just now with zero tailpipe emissions.

The company is clearly leaning on the C-Class name here because it knows how much weight that badge still carries in the premium mid-size segment.

    2. At launch, the main version is the C 400 4MATIC electric

The first version out of the gate is the 360 kW Mercedes-Benz C 400 4MATIC electric, which means this thing is not starting life as a soft, efficiency-first variant. Mercedes says it does the 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.0 seconds, which immediately puts it in properly quick territory for a mid-size luxury saloon.

More variants are set to follow next year, including rear-wheel drive and other battery versions. Mercedes also says a rear-wheel-drive model with an expected range of around 800 km is on the way, so the line-up will broaden beyond this top-end launch version.

    3. Range is a big part of the pitch

Mercedes is quoting up to 762 km of WLTP range for the C 400 4MATIC electric, which is the number it knows people will fixate on first. That is backed by a 94 kWh usable battery, a slippery body with a drag coefficient starting from 0.22, a heat pump, and a braking system capable of up to 300 kW of recuperation.

Naturally, that headline figure will depend on specification, tyres, speed and conditions, but on paper at least, Mercedes is making sure the electric C-Class enters the fight with a number that sounds serious.

    4. Charging looks properly quick too

The electric C-Class uses an 800-volt electrical architecture, and Mercedes says it can add up to 325 km of WLTP range in 10 minutes. DC fast charging tops out at 330 kW, and the car can also use 400-volt chargers if fitted with the optional DC converter.

That matters more than just quoting a big range figure, because if the car can genuinely charge this quickly in the real world, it gives the electric C-Class a much stronger case as a long-distance machine rather than just a city commuter with a premium badge.

    5. Mercedes is calling it the sportiest C-Class ever

That is a big claim, especially for an EV, but Mercedes is throwing a lot of chassis tech at this thing to back it up. The electric C-Class gets a two-speed transmission on the rear axle, and Mercedes says battery-to-wheel efficiency over long distances is 93 percent.

The first gear is shorter for stronger punch off the line and better low-speed response, while second gear is tuned for high-speed efficiency and motorway work.

On top of that, the car can be fitted with AIRMATIC air suspension and 4.5-degree rear-axle steering, the latter cutting the turning circle down to 11.2 metres. In plain terms, Mercedes wants this to feel sharp in tighter corners and surprisingly manageable in urban use, rather than just quick in a straight line.

    6. It is also being pitched as an S-Class-lite for comfort

This is where the usual Mercedes playbook comes back in. The company is not just chasing performance numbers, it is also trying to make the electric C-Class feel more expensive and more relaxing than what you normally expect in this segment.

The cabin gets new high-end seats with available lumbar support, massage, ventilation and 4D sound, plus Mercedes says even the standard seats have fully electric adjustment and heating.

There is also a strong emphasis on refinement. Mercedes says the car has extensive sound insulation, laminated acoustic glass for the front windows, a rigid body structure and additional work done around vibration control, all in the name of making the interior unusually quiet.

    7. The interior is loaded with screen tech, maybe too much for some people

The optional MBUX Hyperscreen measures 39.1 inches across, making it the biggest screen setup ever fitted to a C-Class. Mercedes says it uses matrix backlighting with more than 1,000 individual LEDs, and there is also a Superscreen option with three displays under one glass surface.

Underneath all that sits MB.OS, which is Mercedes-Benz’s new operating system. It supports over-the-air updates and powers a new generation of digital features, including navigation based on Google Maps and a new MBUX virtual assistant that uses a mix of ChatGPT4o, Microsoft Bing and Google Gemini.

That is a lot of tech for one car, and whether all of it feels genuinely useful or just like feature-stacking will need to be judged in the real world.

    8. Mercedes has gone hard on the “wow” details inside

Some of the new cabin features feel like Mercedes deliberately trying to make the electric C-Class stand out from more ordinary rivals, even if a few of them border on being slightly theatrical. One example is the optional SKY CONTROL panoramic roof, which can switch between transparent and opaque sections, and it comes with 162 illuminated stars built into it.

There is also a vegan-certified interior option, making the C-Class only the second Mercedes model to offer that certification after the GLC. Again, it is clear the brand is trying to widen the C-Class’ appeal beyond just traditional buyers looking for a smaller E-Class feel.

    9. Practicality has not been ignored

Despite the dramatic design and all the tech talk, Mercedes is still trying to show that the electric C-Class can function like a proper everyday car. It gets a 470-litre boot, plus a 101-litre front trunk, which is actually useful rather than just symbolic storage.

Mercedes is also talking up the longer wheelbase and improved cabin packaging, with the electric architecture giving the car more usable space than the combustion-engined C-Class saloon.

    10. Safety and assisted driving are a major part of the package

The electric C-Class comes with DISTRONIC as standard in Europe, while the broader assistance suite can use up to 27 cameras and sensors. Mercedes says the car can support steering, lane keeping, braking, acceleration, parking and manoeuvring assistance depending on specification.

There are also some extra touches, including PRE-SAFE curve function, up to 11 airbags, a front centre airbag as standard worldwide, and a reversing function that can automatically retrace part of the route the car has just driven. Market launch starts in the United States, with wider rollout depending on local regulations.

The quote Mercedes really wants people to remember

“The all-new electric C-Class is redefining the mid-size segment for electric vehicles. Customers will get exactly what they expect from this new version of the beloved model: the perfect blend of performance, comfort, dynamics, and intelligence. On top of that, it is the most powerful and sportiest C-Class we’ve ever built, offering pure driving pleasure and outstanding real-world range – all while being the perfect sanctuary for our customer.”

On paper, the new Mercedes-Benz electric C-Class looks like a serious statement. The range is strong, the charging numbers are properly competitive, and Mercedes has avoided making it sound like just another luxury EV that hides behind gimmicks and a giant screen.

It seems, there is real engineering substance here, at least from what has been revealed so far, especially with the two-speed transmission, rear-axle steering and air suspension.

The final verdict however will depend heavily on pricing and market positioning. If Mercedes prices it too ambitiously, then all that tech may not be enough.

But if it lands where a C-Class should, just with the right premium over its combustion sibling, this could end up being one of the more convincing legacy-brand EVs in the mid-size luxury segment.
