Tesla Motors Responds to Consumer Reports' "Worse-than-Average" Rating for Model S

Kuala Lumpur: Tesla Motors CEO, Elon Musk took to Twitter on Wednesday to defend his company following the Consumer Reports' "worse-than-average rating" for Tesla Model S. On Twitter, Musk said, “Consumer Report reliability survey includes a lot of early production cars. Already addressed in new cars.” A few minutes later, he posted another tweet, “Tesla gets top rating of any company in service. Most important, CR says 97% of owners expect their next car to be a Tesla (the acid test).”

First reported by L.A. Times, the Consumer Reports reliability survey collected responses from 1,400 Model S owners, who reported problems with the drivetrain, power equipment, charging equipment, giant iPad-like center console, and body and sunroof squeaks, rattles, and leaks. As a result, Consumer Reports revoked its "recommended" rating for the Tesla Model S, noting a "worse-than-average overall problem rate."

The Consumer Reports also commented on Tesla satisfaction and customer service, “Despite the problems, our data show that Tesla owner satisfaction is still very high: Ninety-seven percent of owners said they would definitely buy their car again. It appears that Tesla has been responsive to replacing faulty motors, differentials, brakes, and infotainment systems, all with a minimum of fuss to owners. And Tesla's attention to customer service has been effective. Almost every survey respondent made note of Tesla’s rapid response and repair time, despite the lack of a traditional dealer service network. For its early adopters, Tesla has made a practice of over delivering on service problems under the factory warranty."
