Chery detailed its big plans for Malaysia earlier this year, announcing four new models for 2026. For the second quarter of the year, the automaker is geared up to introduce its most premium SUV, the Chery Tiggo 9, in the local market. 

Chery recently teased the upcoming Tiggo 9 on its social media handles and has started accepting registrations of interest for it, hinting at the imminent launch. While we wait for the official specifications to be released, let’s take a deep dive into what makes the Tiggo 9 a big deal for the Malaysian market.

A flagship SUV that redefines Chery’s position in Malaysia

The Tiggo 9 is not just another addition to the brand’s local lineup. It highlights a notable shift in the Chinese automaker’s positioning in Malaysia. Chery initially entered the local market with more affordable SUVs, such as the Omoda 5, but it is now preparing to foray into the premium SUV space.

Positioned above the Tiggo 8 and Tiggo 8 Pro, the Tiggo 9 is a D-segment SUV, designed to take on premium alternatives in the market 

Muscular dimensions and bold design

While the local dimensions are yet to be confirmed, the global-spec Tiggo 9 measures 4,810 mm in length, 1,925 mm in width and 1,741 mm in height and spans a wheelbase of 2,800 mm. To put that in perspective, the upcoming full-size SUV is longer and wider than the Tiggo 8 Pro.

The Chery Tiggo 9 follows the automaker’s evolving design philosophy, featuring an octagonal grille paired with large air intakes and sleek headlight clusters, which gives the front fascia a dynamic and bold feel. Accentuating the side profile are a long wheelbase, 20-inch alloy wheels, and clean and flowing lines. 

2.0T AWD drivetrain under the hood

The Malaysian-spec Chery Tiggo 9 will come equipped with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine mated to an all-wheel drive system. Notably, it’s the same engine that we can find under the Tiggo 8 Pro. The said mill is expected to offer a maximum power of 256 PS and a peak torque of 390 Nm. As for the transmission, it is likely to be combined with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

But unlike the front-wheel drive Tiggo 8 Pro, the Tiggo 9 will have an intelligent all-wheel drivetrain and 7 adaptable driving modes - Eco, Normal, Sport, Sand, Mud, Snow and Off-Road. This gives the upcoming SUV a degree of all-terrain versatility that resonates with Malaysian enthusiasts who love occasional getaways around rough terrains.

Notably, Chery Malaysia previously announced that the Tiggo 9 will be offered as a PHEV, showcased at the 2025 Bangkok Motor Show. This variant runs on a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine paired with a dual motor setup, generating a combined output of 381 PS and 610 Nm. This setup is paired to either an 18.67 kWh or a 34.46 kWh battery pack, offering all-electric range of 80 km and 160 km, respectively.

While not confirmed, we may see the Tiggo 9 PHEV on the local roads at a later date.

Technology-loaded interior

The Tiggo 9 features one of the most technologically advanced cabins the brand offers in the global market. At the centre of the dashboard sits a 15.6-inch 2.5K ultra-high definition display powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 Chipset, ensuring fast, smooth and responsive interaction. 

Other advanced technologies you can find inside the SUV are -

• Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity
• HD head-up display
• 10-way power-adjustable driver seat

Safety is one of the key highlights of the upcoming Tiggo 9. The SUV’s bodyshell is built with 85% high-strength steel and 21% hot-formed steel, offering enhanced protection and improved structural rigidity. 

It is important to note that the SUV will come packed with 10 airbags, including
