Toyota C-HR: Know its alternatives

Toyota C-HR: Know its alternatives

Toyota had got the radical looking C-HR in the Malaysian showrooms. This one looks outlandish, has got the right equipment on offer and well, costs a premium than the competition. It is the left field option in a sea of crossovers.

Toyota C-HR

That being said, the Toyota C-HR boasts a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that produces 140 PS of power and 171 Nm of torque. The transmission is a CVT with paddle shifters. There is a lot of equipment on offer including a video recording camera fitted near the rearview mirror. This one helps in documenting the entire trip. The Toyota C-HR price starts from RM 150,000. At this price point, it has more enemies than friends. Here is a list of the Toyota C-HR competition.

Nissan X-Trail

Nissan X-Trail

This mid-size crossover is in its third generation now. Nissan also offers the X-Trail with an AWD. This ensures that this crossover can be taken to handle mild off-roading. Remember, the C-HR doesn’t offer all-wheel or 4-wheel drive. In terms of looks, it has a compact exterior. However, the space inside is more than the competition here. In terms of features, the Nissan X-Trail has zero gravity seats that are way more comfortable than anything you may have experienced so far. Nissan also provides for an all-around monitor that warns you of blind spots while stationary. In terms of engines, the new Nissan X-Trail has a 2.0-litre petrol that produces 144 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque. There is also the 2.5-litre petrol motor that makes 171 PS and 233 Nm. Both these engines are mated to the CVT transmission. Prices start from RM 133,482.

Honda CR-V

Honda CR-V

Honda’s all-new fourth-gen CR-V has opened its sales counter to rave reviews. Not only is the public appreciating the form but also the utility aspect. Think about it. Isn’t the Toyota C-HR more of an HR-V competitor worldwide? Yes, it is. However, the price difference is way too much and the Toyota in Malaysia compares with the CR-V with respect to moolah. The Honda CR-V is much bigger than the C-HR and has got seven seats too. There are cornering lamps, lane keep assist, walk away auto door lock and many more safety aids. Honda has also added a touchscreen infotainment system that is Apple and Android compatible. There are also two engine options now with the CR-V. These are the 1.5-litre turbo petrol that makes 193 PS of power and 243 Nm of torque as well as the 2.0-litre naturally aspirated motor that is good for 154 PS and 189 Nm. Both the engines can be ordered only with a CVT. The Honda CR-V price starts from RM 137,469.

Mazda CX-5

mazda cx-5

The Mazda CX-5 is one of the most capable soft roaders out there but it is again highly underrated. Look at the price of RM 131,000. The form itself is a good-looking package, if not as radical as the one in the Toyota. It has even front parking sensors to boast about. Mazda will also give you a head-up display, powered seats and more. But if you buy a Mazda, you do it for the engine. There are three options here including a diesel. The 2.0-litre petrol engine is a naturally aspirated motor and produces 162 PS and 210 Nm. There is a bigger 2.5-litre engine that makes 192 PS and 257 Nm. The diesel in the meanwhile is a 2.2-litre unit that is good for 173 PS and 420 Nm. All the three engines are mated to a 6-speed automatic. Mazda offers the CX-5 with AWD only on the diesel powertrain. Prices of the Mazda CX-5 start RM 124,424.

Hyundai Tucson

Hyundai Tucson

The Hyundai Tucson is a radical departure from the car it replaces. While there aren’t any standout features in this crossover, Hyundai does give you its regular fare of kit. This includes powered front seats, auto hold function, drive modes, sunroof and front parking sensors. There are again three engine options to choose from. These include a 155 PS/192 Nm 2.0-litre engine that sips petrol, a 1.6-litre turbo petrol that produces 177 PS and 265 Nm and a 2.0-litre diesel that makes 178 PS and 400 Nm. A 6-speed automatic is standard while the turbo petrol has a 7-speed dual clutch option as well. Hyundai has priced the Tucson quite well. The Hyundai Tucson price starts from RM 123,325.

Kia Sorento

Kia Sorento

The Kia Sorento is the only car here whose base price is higher than the hatchback on stilts that we know as the C-HR. The Kia Sorento price starts from RM 158,000. It is the biggest car here in this list and offers a lot more kit for the money than the C-HR. It has front parking sensors, a more upmarket cabin, handsfree boot operation, sunroof and more. There is also the powerful yet efficient 2.2-litre diesel engine that is good for 147 PS of power. Kia also offers seven seats and all-wheel drive.

In this mix, we will suggest the Mazda if its pure driving pleasure that you are looking after, Tucson for the comfort, CR-V for utility and the Sorento if you want all of this in small spades.
