2019 Honda Civic Facelift - Changes explained

Honda is one of the most popular automakers in the Malaysian market and is very active in bringing in new cars and facelifts. The latest one to join the list is the 2019 Honda Civic facelift, a model slated to be launched in the last quarter of the year.

Honda has announced that the 2019 Civic is now available for booking at the all of the 98 dealerships pan Malaysia. The car now gets quite a lot of changes to be true to its facelift standard. The changes have been integrated in almost every front, be it the exterior, interior or the equipment list.

So here is a detailed information note for the changes that the 2019 Honda Civic facelift has adorned.

The exterior bits

The 2019 Honda Civic is just on its mid-cycle and hence, does not get huge changes. However, you can still spot the difference visually with a piano-black finish wing on the front fascia instead of chrome. Even the lower bumper has been tweaked a little with wider black trims near the fog lamp housings.

Get to the rear and the changes continue. This sporty C-segment sedan gets a tailgate spoiler and a bumper garnish to appear slightly different over the outgoing model. It will ride on new 18-inch alloy wheels that have the “fan design”.

The engine bay

Mechanically, there wouldn't be any changes in the 2019 Honda Civic facelift. It continues to feature the same 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, VTEC turbocharged engine that can generate up to 173 PS of power and 220 Nm of torque. The motor will continue to send down the power to the front wheels via the same Earth Dreams CVT gearbox.

Even the entry-level variant retains the same 1.8-litre four-cylinder SOHC mill that churns out 141 PS and 174 Nm on the power and torque figures.

The Civic equipment list

The big news with the new Honda Civic facelift is that it would get the Honda Sensing package with a whole lot of safety equipment additions. The car already gets a lot of the safety features from the pre-facelift model, like ABS, Emergency Brake-force Distribution and brake assist, Vehicle Stability Assist, Hill Start Assist and Emergency Stop Signal. These, along with the inclusion of new front parking sensors, make it to the facelifted model.

However, that is not where the equipment list ends. The features included in the Honda Sensing suite just fill the list to the brim. For driving assistance, there is the Adaptive Cruise Control, Low Speed Follow, Lane Keep Assist System and Lane Departure Warning. Moreover, there are several others, like Forward Collision Warning, Road Departure Mitigation, Collision Mitigation Braking System and Auto High-beam. And lastly, the Honda LaneWatch system gets into the picture for better lane changing.

So how do the variants stack up?

The 2019 Honda Civic facelift will be available in three variants, namely 1.8S, 1.5TC and the range-topping 1.5TC-P. The base variant will get a share of the update, though not entirely. It will have the new front parking sensors and an updated wheel design on the same 16-inch unit. On the inside, the rear seat will get the 60:40 split configuration instead of the previous bench setup.

The mid-level 1.5TC will get LED headlamps and fog lamps, instead of halogen units. Moreover, the Honda LaneWatch camera will make it up to the list. However, the Honda Sensing package, along with 18-inch wheels and new tailgate spoiler, will just be offered on the top-of-the-line 1.5TC-P. Hence, a huge chunk of the new equipment list makes its way to the top-end model only.

Final words

Considering that the launch of the 2019 Civic facelift is still a little far away, Honda has not given out a lot of the details, not even the pricing. However, it is expected to be slightly premium over the current and outgoing lineup, which starts from RM108,165 and goes up to RM128,631.

But in order to keep the price very much competitive, the hike might be nominal for the base variant. The car presently goes up against the likes of the Toyota Corolla Altis and the Mazda 3.
