2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in-hybrid breaks cover

KUALA LUMPUR: During its digital EV Day 2021, Stellantis briefed about its electrification strategy that involved exciting and class-leading vehicles for the company’s 14 brands. The new carmaker created out of the merger between FCA and the PSA announced the full electrification for Opel and teased the upcoming Manta-e, revealed new slogans for all its brands, detailed new EV platforms, and much more. At the event, one of the company’s iconic brands, Jeep also unveiled the first official look at the two-row Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe. 

Jeep with the new slogan - “Zero Emission Freedom” is aiming to roll out electrified versions of its entire range by 2025 and the teased model is one of its important parts. It is the fourth PHEV from the American automaker as we have already seen the Compass 4xe, the Wrangler 4xe, and the Renegade 4xe.

Over the past 30 years and four generations, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has become the brand’s hugely popular product while earning countless industry accolades. So far, the brand has managed to sell more than 7 million units globally. The introduction of the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is a step toward expanding electrification that coincides with the brand’s 80th anniversary.

While the automaker didn't reveal any further details on the upcoming Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, the midsize SUV is likely to get a version of the hybrid system available on the Wrangler 4xe. That’s a 2.0-litre turbo four-popper petrol engine combined with two electric motors, producing a total output of 375 hp and a peak torque of 470 lb-ft. It may also get a new 4WD electric mode allowing the SUV to use off-road purely on its electric charge. 

In terms of design, the upcoming SUV boasts a shorter body, different bumpers, and lights compared to the three-row L. Inside, it is most likely to get a much-improved dash, new tech systems, and a better fit and finish. 

Jeep is set to unveil the fifth-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee at the 2021 New York International Auto Show next month. The company also has the all-electric iterations of the full-size luxury SUVs- Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer in the pipeline.
