2022 Toyota Corolla Cross comes with a unique look in Japan

KUALA LUMPUR: After making its presence in several markets including Southeast Asia, the US, and Taiwan, the Toyota Corolla Cross is now finally introduced in the home market. But as compared to the versions available in the global markets, the Japanese-spec Corolla Cross is quietly different with a unique exterior design and a slightly retuned powertrain, although the interior tech remains almost the same. 

Let’s discuss the new Corolla Cross in detail, starting with the variants and price.

Toyota Japan offers the compact SUV in two versions - base-spec petrol and Hybrid E-Four, priced at JPY 1,999,000 (RM 75,963) and JPY 3,199,000 (RM 121,552), respectively. 

Moving to the different exterior design, the Japan-spec model has a slimmer upper grille mated to a wider main grille, which is placed a bit lower. The headlights and eyebrow-style daytime running lights are also restyled for a unique look. Toyota also reprofiled the SUV’s front bumper and provided it with optional fog lamps. On the rear as well, the bumper is tweaked with a slim chrome strip along with revised tail lights. Also part of the kit is the dynamic turn signals available for higher grades, a hands-free powered tailgate, and an optional Panoramic Roof.

It is to be noted that the Corolla Cross has the biggest luggage capacity in its segment measuring 487 litres. It also comes with an additional Luggage Active Box.

No changes are there inside the cabin as the vehicle continues to have a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. As for safety, Toyota Safety Sense is available as standard. 

Powering the Japan-spec Corolla Cross is a slightly revised 1.8-litre Dual VVT-i naturally-aspirated four-cylinder gasoline engine that generates 140 PS (1 PS more) of maximum power at 6,200 rpm and 170 Nm (2 Nm more) peak torque at 3,700 rpm. The SUV is also on offer with a hybrid setup that generates a total system output of 122 PS. A continuously variable transmission is available as standard.

Toyota produces the home-spec vehicle in the Takaoka Plant located in Japan with a monthly target of 4,400 units.
