BAIC and EPMB team up for automotive manufacturing in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR:  EP Manufacturing Berhad has collaborated with BAIC International Development Co. Ltd to accelerate the production of vehicles in Malaysia. EPMB's subsidiary, Peps-JV (Melaka) Sdn Bhd, will manufacture BAIC vehicles, starting with BJ40+ and x55ii. The memorandum of understanding includes plans to come up with electric vehicles in 2025.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Why has EP Manufacturing signed a memorandum of understanding with BAIC?

EP Manufacturing Berhad has collaborated with BAIC International Development Co. Ltd to accelerate the production of vehicles in Malaysia.
  • Where will the production of GWM and BAIC vehicles take place?

Production for both GWM and BAIC vehicles will be handled at the Melaka plant.
  • EPMB has made an announcement wherein it has stated that it will act as a vehicle assembler. BAIC will offer assistance in overseeing the assembly process, technical aspects, and training. BAIC will also handle marketing and sales of vehicles in the ASEAN region.

In Malaysia, EPMB will manufacture parts for BAIC's X55II, BJ40P, and future EV RHD models to enhance localization gradually. This has been done to utilize the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement for regional coverage and seek policy-related support from the Malaysian government. EPMB anticipates growth and additional revenue through this partnership, aligning with its carbon credit aspirations and electric vehicle venture.

With this agreement, both entities aim to capitalize on their strengths and use their knowledge in the automotive sector. The main motive behind this collaboration is to leverage the manufacturing capabilities of EP Manufacturing and the automotive expertise of BAIC to enhance the production of vehicles in Malaysia.

The recent agreement between EPMB and BAIC follows closely after EPMB signed an eight-year contract to manufacture Great Wall Motor vehicles, including the Haval Jolion and Haval H6. Production for both GWM and BAIC vehicles will be handled at the Melaka plant.
