BMW introduced the 2 Series Gran Coupe in a sole 218i Gran Coupé M Sport variant in the local market last October. Since then this luxury and affordable CKD model is winning the hearts of Malaysian auto enthusiasts. And the credit not only goes to its price tag reading RM 199,177 but also to its captivating coupé-style silhouette, sophisticated interior, great driving dynamics, and best-in-class driver-assistance kit. 

The mentioned price includes a two-year standard warranty and the ongoing sales and service tax exemption that is about to end in December. With a five-year unlimited-mileage warranty and a five-year free service pack, the price rises to RM 211,367.

Sporty exterior design

The exterior of this BMW saloon is characterized by a sporty design, frameless doors, and an elegant coupé silhouette. On the front, it gets a 3D-mesh single-unit kidney grille teamed up with slim, slanted LED headlights and LED foglights. 

For an extraordinarily dynamic presence, its aerodynamic design features a lower center of gravity with an M Aerodynamics package while its sleek frameless front doors accentuate the fluid style. The side profile looks more appealing with modern flared wheel arches and 18-inch M light-alloy wheels in double-spoke style 819 M Bicolour with run-flat tyres.

Towards the rear, we can see carbon fibre tailpipes, a black rear spoiler, and a high-gloss black band that connects the slim wrap-around LED tail lights.

Getting inside, here the luxury coupe can impress you with a wealth of sophistication. The cabin features illuminated trim finishers in Illuminated Boston, BMW Individual headliner anthracite, and LED lighting via the Lights Package enhancing the overall ambiance. 

It comes with a BMW Live Cockpit Plus featuring an analog speedometer, rev counter and a 5.1-inch screen that displays information such as the car’s speed, navigation instruction, and the status of the driver assistance systems.

It is mated with an M leather steering wheel and M-specific pedals.

Complementing the hi-tech cockpit is an 8.8-inch touchscreen control display that supports the BMW Navigation system, BMW ConnectedDrive services, BMW Digital Key, and a 6-speaker stereo sound system.

Another important highlight is sport seats for driver and front passenger. These come with seat and backrest bolsters and adjustable thigh support and are wrapped in black Leather Dakota.

On the center console, we can see the gear selector, iDrive controller, driving dynamics controls, and the push start button. In front of it, there are cup holders and a storage tray for wireless charging.

Coming to the luggage compartment, here the coupe offers a capacity of 430 litres i.e. 40 litres more than the BMW 2 Series Coupe.

Powerful engine

The 2 Series Gran Coupe is equipped with a 1.5-litre three-cyl gasoline mill that is powerful yet remains efficient for daily use. This mill complies with the EU6d-TEMP standard and delivers a maximum power output of 140 PS from 4,600 to 6,500 rpm along with a peak torque of 220 Nm between 1,480 and 4,200 rpm. It enables the car to hit the century sprint in 8.7 seconds with a top speed of 213 kmph. Its combined fuel consumption is rated at 5.9 litres per 100 km (17 kmpl).

Seven-speed Steptronic DCT

BMW paired the potent 1.5-litre mill with a seven-speed Steptronic double-clutch transmission, which is designed with the front-wheel-drive architecture. It offers class-leading driving dynamics along with a significantly increased amount of cabin space. 

Driving Assistant

The 218i Gran Coupé M Sport comes with an advanced Driving Assistant pack which includes several features like Lane Change Warning, Crossing Traffic Warning, Rear Collision Warning, Speed Limit Assist, Lane Departure Warning with active steering intervention, and Forward Collision Warning with brake intervention function.
