BYD Atto 2 PHEV debuts in Europe - Over 1,000 km combined range, class-leading fuel efficiency
KUALA LUMPUR: The plug-in hybrid version of the BYD Atto 2 has made its global debut in the European market. This is one of the very few instances when a BYD PHEV was launched in the Old Continent before it arrived in China.

Dimensions
Both variants are 4,330 mm (20 mm longer than the Atto 2 EV) in length, 1,830 mm in width and 1,675 mm in height and span a 2,620-mm long wheelbase. The boot space measures 425 litres, which is expandable up to 1,335 litres with rear seats folded.
Exterior
The compact crossover SUV boasts a strong visual presence with a larger middle front grille (compared to the EV), integrated full-LED headlights and slim daytime-running lights at the front. Adding to its dynamic look is a sharp-styled front bumper along with bright highlights and vertical air curtains at the outer edges.
The side profile features lower cladding with highlighted sections, a floating roofline and strong surface curves. The Active comes equipped with 16-inch wheels, while the Boost runs on bigger 17-inch units. Towards the rear, we can find a convex-shaped bumper with a full-width light bar and ‘Chinese knot’ tail-lights.
Drivetrain, range and charging
As mentioned above, the Atto 2 PHEV is powered by the brand’s Super Hybrid DM tech, combining EV driving experience with instant response and refinement. The setup incorporates a specifically developed Xiaoyun 1.5-litre petrol engine, dual high-speed electric motors with an integrated controller, and a Blade battery pack.
It operates in dual mode -
- EV mode: Where electric motors solely drive the wheels.
- HEV mode: where the petrol engine charges the battery and powers the electric motors

The sharply styled cabin of the electrified Atto 2 has a spacious layout with horizontal lines across the dashboard, high-quality materials, and SUV-inspired touches like chunky door handles. In comparison to the pure EV counterpart, the PHEV comes with newly designed front seats with adjustable headrests, a relocated gear selector (moved from the centre stack to the steering column) and an additional headrest for the third rear passenger.
