Malaysia's best amateur golfers headed to Germany after 2026 MercedesTrophy National Final

KUALA LUMPUR: Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has wrapped up the 2026 MercedesTrophy National Final Malaysia, closing out the local leg of the brand's long-running amateur golf tournament.

The MercedesTrophy is now in its 36th year and draws players from more than 60 countries, making it one of the biggest amateur golf series in the world.

The road to the final ran through four qualifying rounds held at Tropicana Golf & Country Resort and Kota Permai Golf & Country Club. The top five golfers from each round moved on to the National Final Malaysia, which took place on 22 June at The ELS Club Desaru Coast in Johor.

The championship layout there is no pushover, and players had to lean on accuracy and course management rather than raw power to post a good score.

Three golfers came out on top in their respective categories. Ng Jun Lip took first place in Category A, Mohd Azli bin Jamal won Category B, and Liew Kim Weng finished top of Category C.

The top three golfers in each category, ranked by highest Stableford points, earned an all-inclusive trip to the MercedesTrophy World Final 2026.

That event runs from 28 September to 2 October 2026 at Der Öschberghof, a five-star hotel in Germany's Black Forest with views towards Lake Constance and the Swiss Alps. The Malaysian contingent will go up against qualifiers from around the world there.

There were other prizes on the table too. The Hole-In-One prize was a Mercedes-Benz E 350 e, a plug-in hybrid sedan that retails at RM418,888 in Malaysia.

Datuk Shaifuddin bin Abdul Manan won the Drive to the Major title, which comes with an all-expenses-paid trip to The Open 2026 from 15 to 20 July.
