Mercedes welcomes AMG E53, bids goodbye to the E43

KUALA LUMPUR: Mercedes, the premium German carmaker has introduced a new baby AMG in its E-Class range, the AMG E53. It would come as a replacement to the AMG E43, which was launched just two years back, in late 2016. The latest electrified hi-spec model has been revealed only in wagon and sedan variants presently.

Mercedes AMG E53 Side

The AMG E53 is powered by a twin turbo 3.0-litre straight-six powertrain and backed with Mercedes' EQ Boost mild-hybrid technology. AMG-tuned mild E-hybrid system operates using a motor-generator and it helps in improving the power during low RPMs. The motor, however, is unable to power the vehicle on its own.

The performance of the car is quite appreciative, generating a maximum power of 435 PS and yielding a peak torque of 520 Nm. The new AMG comes with AMG Driver's package, which enables one to reach a top speed of 270 kmph, though it is electronically limited to 250 kmph only. Power is funneled to the 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system via a SPEEDSHIFT 9G automatic gearbox.

Mercedes AMG E53 Rear

The older AMG E43 got its power from a twin turbo 3.0-litre V6. The engine used to offer a power of 401 PS and a peak torque of 521 Nm. It too featured an all-wheel-drive system and had nine-speed automatic transmission like the latest one. The performance has undoubtedly witnessed a boost in the AMG E53.

From the cosmetic viewpoint, the new replacement of the AMG E43 has been designed with a few remarkable upgrades. Disc-shaped quad exhaust tips with distinct diffuser feature add to the sportiness at the rear. It has adaptive LED headlamps and 19-inch alloy wheels, whereas, 20-inch wheels are available as optional.  Air suspension, sports exhaust, and driving modes come as standard features.

At the technology front, it would include modern features like multiple parking cameras, 12.3-inch infotainment display, S-Class-grade active safety kit, keyless go and a panoramic sunroof, some of which are optional.

The approximate price of the sedan variant starts at £61,835 (RM 3,31,850.33 ), while the wagon variant starts from £63,835 (RM 3,42,669.47).
