Mitsubishi Triton 2019: What makes it great?

Mitsubishi Triton 2019: What makes it great?

Mitsubishi first rolled out the Triton pickup truck way back in 1978, and is currently one of the most successful and best-selling vehicles in its genre. The Triton is so popular, in fact, that Mitsubishi has been able to sell millions upon millions of these all over the globe. At present, the Mitsubishi Triton is in its fifth-generation avatar, which had its debut in 2015. The fifth-gen Triton shares its body-on-frame platform with its Pajero Sport SUV sibling. However, Mitsubishi’s light pickup truck recently received a major facelift for 2019, and in Malaysia, it goes up against arch-rivals such as the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. But, while those trucks are pretty good on their own, the 2019 Mitsubishi Triton has managed to make a mark of its own. So, what exactly makes it great? Well, let’s try and find out…

Competitive pricing

Pricing is unequivocally one of the most important factors to consider when making a new car purchase, and that’s exactly where the 2019 Mitsubishi Triton ticks the first box. Its bare-bones entry-level variant - the ambiguously named Quest, starts at just RM 78,890. In comparison, both of its nearest competitors start from around RM 90,000. Next up in the range are the standard VGT trims, which retail for RM 100,200 and RM 105,990 for the manual transmission (MT) and automatic transmission (AT) variants, respectively. Moving further north, there are the VGT Premium trims, which also offer manual and automatic variants, and are pegged at RM 112,500 and RM 118,600, respectively. Finally, there’s the range-topping VGT Adventure X variant of the 2019 Triton. This one costs RM 135,200 - making it remarkably less expensive than its immediate rivals.

Reliable and capable mechanicals

One of the pre-requisites whilst designing any pickup truck involves the reliability and overall capability of its mechanical components, including its engine and drivetrain. In the case of the 2019 Mitsubishi Triton, there are two engines on offer, with the entry-level Quest being the only one that gets the lower output unit. It’s a 2,477 cc four-cylinder diesel engine and gets a fixed-geometry turbocharger. It puts out a modest 108 hp and 200 Nm of maximum torque, while transmission duties are taken care of by a 5-speed manual gearbox. However, the rest of the variants of the 2019 Triton make use of a 2,442 cc four-pot oil-burner, though this one features a variable geometry turbocharger (VGT). This unit produces 178 hp and 430 Nm of torque and can be optioned with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic.

Proper off-road gear

The top-of-the-range Adventure X variant of the new Triton comes with Mitsubishi’s famous and proven Super Select 4WD II system. It’s accompanied by a special ‘Off-Road Mode’ selector, which can put the Triton into one of four terrain modes - gravel, mud, sand, rock. This selectable four-wheel drive hardware is purpose-built to handle challenging terrain and weather conditions. By using a rotary knob, drivers can shift from standard rear-wheel drive to four-wheel drive mode at speeds of up to 100 kmph. There’s also a low-range mode that’s geared specifically for hard-core off-roading, along with a locking centre differential and Hill-Descent Control (HDC). Furthermore, the 2019 Triton boasts a maximum wading depth of 700 mm, while it has an approach angle of 31 degrees, ramp breakover angle of 25 degrees, and a departure angle of 23 degrees.

Features and safety equipment

The 2019 Mitsubishi Triton can be had with quite a lot of kit, especially if you opt for the higher trims. For example, there are automatic full-LED headlamps with LED DRLs, rain-sensing wipers, 18-inch alloy wheels, remote keyless entry with push-start ignition, six-speaker audio system, cruise control, automatic climate control with rear vents, leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, powered driver’s seat, touch-infotainment head unit with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, Bluetooth and voice command, and all-round parking sensors with a reversing camera.

Mitsubishi Triton 2019 safety

The 2019 Mitsubishi Triton was awarded a five-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating. Its modern list of safety equipments includes seven airbags, Active Stability Control (ASC), Traction Control (TC), Brake Override System (BOS), Hill-Start Assist (HSA), Trailer Stability Assist (TSA), Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM), Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Lane Change Alert (LCA), Auto High Beam (AHB), Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System (UMS), speed-sensing auto door locks, and the obligatory ISOFIX anchor points.

Stylish exterior

The 2019 Triton’s exterior design can surely grab attention, at least for a pickup truck this side of a Raptor. It features the Japanese brand’s aggressive Dynamic Shield front design, ultra-sleek headlamps with distinctive DRLs, twin-bar grille, chunky bumper, and large light clusters housing the fog lamps and turn signals. The side of the truck sports squared wheel arches, muscular fenders, stylish alloy wheels, fixed running boards, and a unique ‘J-Line’ design for the rear of the cab. The back gets clear lens tail lamps with signature LED elements and a high-set bumper with well-incorporated steps.
