Nissan GT-R (X) 2050 concept is a wild imagination of the future GT-R
KUALA LUMPUR: The designs of Nissan’s latest models are proof that the Japanese automaker's designing is quite futuristic. And recently a student intern’s envision took this a notch further by visualizing the future looks of the company’s iconic supercar, the Nissan GT-R.
We are talking about the future automotive designer Jaebum "JB" Choi who is a graduating senior of the ArtCenter College of Design, California and who has also completed his internship at Nissan Design America (NDA). As part of his design thesis, Choi created the original sketches and renderings of the Nissan GT-R (X) 2050, which has now been transformed into a full-scale model by the automaker.
In the above image, you can notice that the GT-R (X) 2050 is amazingly small as it measures 2908 mm in length, 1537 mm in width, and 658 mm in height. The reason behind the diminutive size is Choi’s imagination of a car that would be a ‘wearable machine,’ something similar to a futuristic exoskeleton.
"Exo-skeletons today make people stronger by wearing mechanical structures. I tried to fit the size of a person’s body as much as I could as if I were wearing a car," Choi explains about the vehicle’s compact layout. "I wanted to create a new form of machine that is not a vehicle to ride, it is the space where the machine and the human become one".
The seating position is the most unique thing about the GT-R (X) 2050 concept. It is driven by lying flat down on the stomach, with the head at the front axle and hands and feet at each wheel. For driving, a special suit would also be needed, including a helmet for the brain to vehicle connectivity. This implies that it would essentially read the driver's mind to operate.
Other than these wild characteristics, the concept features some of the GT-R styling details, which include Nissan’s signature V-Motion front end, iconic tail lights, and red-striped accents taken from GT-R Nismo. The supercar would also feature advanced aerodynamic elements such as an active wing.
According to Nissan Design America Vice President David Woodhouse, “JB is a super-talented, super-creative designer and his ideas about future supercars driven by brain-to-vehicle integration fit perfectly with Nissan’s advanced work in the B2V field.” Woodhouse further added that it was super exciting for the NDA team to help JB give form to this idea as a 1:1 model.
