Among the several SUVs set to launch in Malaysia next year is the Proton X90. This is Proton’s upcoming seven-seater model based on the Geely Haoyue, also known as Okavango in the global markets. It will compete in the D-segment SUV category with cars like the Mazda CX-8, Kia Carnival, and Hyundai Santa Fe as its main rivals.

    As the SUV is a rebadged version of the Geely model, it is likely to get a similar design language with a few unique bits marking its unique identity. However, the test mules of the heavily camouflaged fail to confirm anything about the design of the upcoming SUV, thus we are only left with the expectations. 

    Among the key exterior features of the X90 would be a bold face, LED headlamps, L-shaped DRLs, front and rear fog lights, LED tail lights, 18-inch alloy wheels (17-inch as standard), and roof rails.

    The X90 will underpin Geely’s CV platform, which was introduced with the company's first MPV, the Jiaji, in 2018. With the same platform under its skin, the Haoyue becomes its largest SUV measuring 4,835 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width, 1,785 mm in height, and carries a wheelbase of 2,815 mm. As compared to the X70, the upcoming Proton SUV is 316 mm longer, 69 mm wider, 91 mm taller and has a 145 mm longer wheelbase.

    Proton is expected to offer the X90 in multiple engine options, including 1.5-litre and 1.8-litre variations. It may include a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder 48V hybrid mill, which the automaker previewed last year. The said mill generates a maximum power of 190 PS at 5,500 rpm and a peak torque of 300 Nm from 1,500 - 4,000 rpm.

    Another possibility is a 1.5-litre engine delivering 177 PS and 255 Nm, the version of which is locally assembled at the brand’s Tanjung Malim plant. The said engine assembly line has recently hit the 10k production milestone and is set to manufacture 60,000 units of the 1.5 TGDI engine next year to power several Proton models.

    In terms of safety, the Proton X90 specs sheet might comprise six airbags (front, side, and curtain), a 360-degree camera, ABS, EBD, vehicle stability control, hill descent control, hill start assist, rear Isofix child seat anchors, and tyre pressure monitor. Advanced safety gears like the Blind Spot Information System, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Intelligent High Beam Control, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control with stop and go functionality, Parking assist and Automatic high beam are also likely to be part of the kit.

    As for the Proton X90 price estimation, we can take reference from the Philippines market where the donor vehicle Okavango is sold between PHP 1,503,000 (approximately equal to RM 120k) and PHP 1,765,000 (RM 140,000).
