Tesla Recalls 90,000 Model S Sedans Over Seat Belt Issue

Kuala Lumpur: Elon Musk's Tesla Motors is recalling its entire fleet of Model S sedans to check their front seatbelts after one passenger's seatbelt disconnected itself when she turned back to talk to rear passengers. Tesla believes that the seat anchors were not properly bolted together. The recall is unusual with this electric car automaker and involves around 90,000 units worldwide which were produced since 2012 to the latest P85D. Apart from that, Tesla's other vehicles like Model X SUV and the Roadster are not affected. Moreover, the back seat belts of Model S are also not affected. In Malaysia, there are just two units of Model S via Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (GreenTech Malaysia), while up to 110 units will be shipped in further.

The California-based automaker said in a statement, “Tesla recently found a Model S in Europe with a front seat belt that was not properly connected to the outboard lap pretensioner. This vehicle was not involved in a crash and there were no injuries. This is the only customer vehicle we know of with this condition. We have since inspected the seat belts in over 3,000 vehicles spanning the entire range of Model S production and found no issues.”

Tesla owners are being asked to visit a Tesla service centre for an inspection. For further convenience, customers are being contacted to book appointments and have their vehicles checked. The safety check would just take around three to six minutes. A Tesla spokesperson elaborated to Bloomberg: “In early November, a customer sitting in the front passenger seat turned to speak with occupants in the rear and the seat belt became disconnected. The seat belt is anchored to the outboard lap pretensioner through two anchor plates that are bolted together. The bolt that was supposed to tie the two anchors together wasn’t properly assembled.”
