2020 Ford Everest gets 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbo-petrol engine in China

KUALA LUMPUR: While most markets get the Ford Everest with diesel powertrains, China gets it with a petrol one. Earlier, it had a 2.0-litre EcoBoost turbocharged four-pot petrol engine, and now it comes with a bigger, 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbo-petrol four-cylinder unit. The interesting fact is that this is the same engine that powers the Ford Mustang internationally.

The new engine is tuned to produce 275 PS of maximum power and 455 Nm of peak torque while mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. A lower state of tune is also offered that generate 247 PS, though torque remains the same. This is around 28 PS and 95 Nm higher than the engine it replaces. The China-spec Ford SUV also has rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive options with the new powertrain. In terms of fuel efficiency, Ford claims 9.9 kmpl in the Chinese market.

Besides this, the automaker is already working on the next iteration of the Everest, with prototypes spied testing. The images show the redesigned exteriors of the SUV, including a honeycomb mesh grille and split headlights. The Interiors would also undergo some large changes. Some expected features are three-zone climate control, ambient lighting, digital instrument display, and a panoramic sunroof.

In Malaysia, the seven-seater Ford Everest launched in October 2018. It is available in two variants - 2.0L Trend and the 2.0L Bi-turbo Titanium. The Trend variant houses a single-turbo 2.0-litre turbodiesel mill churning out 180 PS of power and 420 Nm of torque. In comparison, the Titanium variant carries a 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engine generating 213 PS and 500 Nm. Both variants are mated to a 10-speed automatic gearbox unit. The Ford Everest Trend is priced at RM 228,888, while the Titanium retails for RM 258,888.

The next-gen Ford Everest is likely to debut in international markets by 2021, and for the local market, we can expect the arrival by 2022.
