2021 Toyota Corolla Cross debuts in Thailand

KUALA LUMPUR: Crossovers and SUVs are two popular segments with the highest sales figure, and therefore automakers are seen investing most time and money in these two areas. The trend seems to continue as Toyota has revealed the all-new Corolla Cross in Thailand. As the name suggests, the car is based on the automaker’s 54-year-old nameplate, the Corolla.

On the design front, the Corolla Cross looks nothing like its counterparts. Like the Yaris Cross, Toyota can give the Corolla crossover version a distinct look from its pears - the Altis, Corolla Hatchback, and Corolla wagon.

In Thailand, Toyota Corolla Cross will be available in four variants - Sport, Hybrid Smart, Hybrid Premium, and Hybrid Premium Safety. The base Sport trim comes with halogen projector headlights. The Hybrid Smart gains LED projector headlights and several sets of wheels. The Hybrid Premium benefits from hands-free tailgate operation, rear-cross traffic alert, and blind-spot monitoring. Lastly, the range-topping trim, the Hybrid Premium Safety gets Toyota Safety Sense and many driver-assist safety features.

• The 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross like the C-HR and Corolla sedan rides on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TGNA-C) platform
• Dimension wise, it is placed between the C-HR and RAV4. 2020 Corolla Cross specs sheet shows the following measurements - 4,460 mm X 1,825 mm X 1,620 MM (LXWXH)
• Its wheelbase measures the same as the C-HR, i.e., 2,640 mm
• The Corolla Cross is offered in two powertrain options - 1.8-litre petrol and hybrid. The former produces a maximum power of 140 hp along with a peak torque of 175 Nm. In the hybrid variants, the 1.8-litre mill (98 hp and 142 Nm) is paired with a 600-volt electric motor (72 hp and 163 Nm).
• The petrol and hybrid power unit is paired with CVT and e-CVT, respectively

Overall, the 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross seems like a promising car that we think will do well in the Malaysian market.
