All-new 2022 BMW M3 and M4 xDrive gains AWD option
KUALA LUMPUR: BMW introduced the M3 and M4 last September and now the automaker has announced all-wheel-drive variants of the two performance models. The set received models will go on sale from July 2021. Apart from the AWD system, the duo will feature an automatic gearbox and Competition specs.
Officially called the M3 Competition xDrive and M4 Competition xDrive, the two will source power from a 3.0-litre turbo straight-six mill that makes a maximum power of 510 PS at 6,250 rpm along with a peak torque of 650 Nm from 2,750 to 5,500 rpm. The power is sent to the wheels via an 8-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission and M xDrive system.
On the performance front, the M3 and M4 can hit the 100 kmph mark in just 3.5 seconds which is 0.4 seconds faster than the rear-wheel-drive version. The cars can attain a top speed of 250 kmph, it goes to 290 kmph with the optional M Driver's Package.
Helping the duo perform better are following gears -
- Electronically controlled multi-plate clutch
- Driveshafts and output shafts
- Transfer case with control unit and integrated wheel slip limitation
- Active M Differential
- Double-joint spring strut front axle
- Specially adapted front axle geometry
- Individually tuned steering ratio
- Bespoke engine oil supply system
- 19-inch front and 20-inch M light-alloy forged wheels
Like the ongoing BMW M5, the driver in M3 and M4 M xDrive AWD will be able to set up the AWD system as per his preference. Three modes will be available - the default 4WD setting offers maximum traction while maintaining a rear-biased power split, the 4WD Sport setup ensures a more rear-biased for dynamic driving situations. For those looking for more dynamic performance, switch off the DSC system and engage the 2WD model, where only rear wheels are driven.
With the optional M Traction Control system, traction can be adjusted in ten stages, the same way as on RWD models.
The M3 xDrive price starts at £77,015 (approx. RM 431k) which is a few bucks more than the RWD version. The M4 xDrive, on the other hand, is two grand premium at £78,315 (approx. RM 438k).
