BYD Atto 2 DM-i PHEV debuts in Australia; will it come to Malaysia?

KUALA LUMPUR: Globally revealed a year ago, the BYD Atto 2 DM-i has now made its way to the Australian market.  The plug-in hybrid version of the B-segment crossover is priced from AUD 24,990 (approximately equal to RM 70,939), making it the country’s cheapest PHEV model.

BYD Atto 2 DM-i PHEV: Key highlights 

• The plug-in hybrid Atto 2 is offered in two variants in Australia - Essential and Premium, both powered by BYD’s DM-i plug-in hybrid system,  
• It combines a 72kW/122Nm 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine and a 145kW/300Nm electric motor. 
• The base-spec Essential trim gets a 7.85-kWh BYD Blade LFP battery with an all-electric range of 39 km, while the range-topping Premium comes with a bigger 18.03-kWh unit offering a pure EV range of 90 km. The combined range is 845 km and 845 km, respectively.

• Notably, the PHEV has three modes - EV (runs on battery power alone), HEV Series (engine acts as a generator to charge the battery, and the motor drives the wheels and HEV Parallel (petrol engine and electric motor work together).
• In terms of dimensions, the BYD Atto 2 DM-i measures 4,330 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width and 1,675 mm in height and spans a wheelbase of 2,620 mm. The boot space measures 425 litres, expandable up to 1,335 litres with rear seats folded.

• The compact crossover SUV boasts a strong visual presence with integrated full-LED headlights, slim daytime-running lights and a sharp-styled front bumper.
• The standard feature kit includes - 16-inch alloy wheels, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch infotainment unit, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 4-speaker sound system, 6 airbags, a 360-degree camera, a tyre pressure monitoring system and advanced driver-assistance systems.

• The top-spec Premium exclusively gets 17-inch alloy wheels, a 12.8-inch touchscreen, 8 speakers, a panoramic sunroof, parking sensors, ambient lighting, power-adjustable seats, and Vehicle-to-load.

Will the BYD Atto 2 DM-i PHEV come to Malaysia?

The possibility of the BYD Atto 2 DM-i coming to Malaysia is highly likely, as the brand aims to expand its hybrid presence in the country. However, we will probably have to wait until the brand's local assembly operations begin.
