Hyundai inaugurates its first Southeast Asia factory in Indonesia

KUALA LUMPUR: It is indeed a big day for Indonesia, as it becomes the first Southeast Asian country to house the Hyundai Motor Company plant.  Called the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia, the new plant will be building the IONIQ 5 EV and in a way help the country build a robust EV ecosystem.

The new Hyundai plant is located in Deltamas industrial complex near Cikarang, 40 km east from Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta.

At the inauguration ceremony, Hyundai also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indonesian government to build and operate a local manufacturing hub that will be the automaker's production centre for the Southeast Asian region.

Part of the landmark event were several big dignitaries from both Hyundai and the Indonesian government. Included in the list were -

• Joko Widodo, President of the Republic of Indonesia
• Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, Coordinating Minister of Maritime and Investment
• Airlangga Hartarto, Coordinating Minister of Economic Affairs
• Budi Karya, Minister of Investment Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Transportation
• Erick Thohir, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises
• Pratikno, State Secretary
• Park Tae-sung, Korean Ambassador to Indonesia
• Euisun Chung, Executive Chair of Hyundai Motor Group

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia's current production capacity stands at 150,000 units. In the future, it would be increased to 250,000 units with an investment of around USD 1.55 billion.

The new Hyundai plant in Indonesia exemplifies the automaker’s commitment to sustainable development and supports its ‘Progress for Humanity’ vision as well. How? Well, by using environmental friendly technologies like the use of solar power and water-based paint in the vehicle painting process.

The first car slated for production at the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia is none other than the IONIQ 5. It’s the same Hyundai EV that recently got launched in Malaysia.
