KUALA LUMPUR: Perodua is steadily progressing toward rolling out its first electric car. The journey began with the preview of the eM-O hatchback concept in 2023, followed by the eMO-I and eMO-II iterations in 2024. Now, the latest chapter unfolds with the debut of the new eMO EV final prototype at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
When will the Perodua EV launch?
The Perodua EV will launch by the end of 2025.What is the initial monthly production target?
Peroua is targeting a monthly production capacity of 500 units in the initial phase. The Perodua EV is in the final stage and ready to hit the roads by the end of this year. The timeline meets the Malaysian Government’s Electric Vehicle Agenda, which calls for national carmakers to roll out EVs by 2025.
Stylish SUV-crossover design
Dubbed as the Perodua Aspirations, the model is covered in an ultra-dark, Vantablack-style finish, giving it a futuristic edge. It has taken on a new look that appears quite different from the earlier hatchback form. The EV adopts a more stylish SUV-crossover design with a high ground clearance and large 18-inch wheels.
While the automaker is yet to reveal the EV’s exact dimensions, it describes the vehicle as a “small B-segment” model. It looks bigger than the Perodua EV and is likely to be positioned above the upcoming entry-level EVs, such as the Proton e.Mas 5 in terms of size.
Impressive driving range: Up to 410 km on a single charge
Perodua EV is expected to get an LFP battery pack sourced from CATL (a leading EV battery maker), offering a range of 400 to 410 km on a single charge. Initially, the motor, inverter, and battery will be imported, with plans to localise them later.
The Perodua EV will support both AC and DC charging power, juicing up the 100% battery in approximately 8 eight hours when using the AC unit. However, the DC charging is expected to provide 30-80% SoC in just 30 minutes.
Affordable and practical EV option
Perodua’s first EV seems to be an affordable and practical option in the crowded EV market, with an expected price tag of less than RM 100,000.
