Perodua backs MITI’s clarification on automotive investment, PDA and P2SA follow suit

KUALA LUMPUR: Perodua has expressed its support to MITI (Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry) for clarifying its position on the National Automotive Policy (NAP), which aims to encourage investment that benefits Malaysia's automotive industry.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What does MITI’s stance on automotive investment mean?

MITI has provided clarification for new EV and CKD investments under NAP, ensuring that all new investments contribute to localisation and do not disrupt the existing ecosystem.
  • What does the NAP aim for?

NAP aims to build a progressive and balanced Malaysian automotive industry with investments, research and development, technology transfer, job creation and development of Next Generation Vehicles (NxGV).
  • The automaker applauds MITI for its vision for building a progressive and balanced Malaysian automotive industry that benefits all.

Strengthening the ecosystem through NAP and NxGV

Guided by NAP, the automotive industry's ecosystem will be further strengthened and create significant economic spillover to foster shared prosperity for all stakeholders. The policy supports -

    • Long-term sustainable employment
    • Investments in infrastructure
    • Human capital enrichment
    • Research and development
    • Commitment towards technology and technical sharing
    • Development of local entrepreneurs involving local vendors and dealers

The policy’s Next Generation Vehicle (NxGV) vision supports mobility innovation, including a wider range of customer-centric services along with add-on mobility services such as enhanced safety and mobile integration powered by internet technology.

Perodua Dealers Association supports MITI’s clarification

Following Perodua’s support, Perodua Dealers Association (consisting of 200 local entrepreneurs) also welcomed the clarification made by MITI on encouraging investment into the industry, aimed at promoting local businesses.

“We also wish to thank MITI for working closely with us in developing the automotive sector, as well as helping our members to expand and prosper. The trust shown by both the government and the Malaysian public has allowed us to reinvest in this country by way of business expansions and social responsibility programmes,” said PDA.

Perodua Suppliers Association welcomes MITI’s clarification

Similarly, Perodua Suppliers Association (P2SA) also expressed its full support for the recent statement by MITI regarding the conditions set for new CKD entrants.

Notably, the policy applies high-volume assembly conditions across all brands, regardless of their country of origin, to ensure that the growth of the EV sector does not come at the expense of the existing local ecosystem.

“Our members are ready, eager and will continue to embrace the transition to E-mobility. MITI's stance protects the years of investment we have poured into local industrial capacity and technology while encouraging new players to integrate with Malaysian suppliers,” said P2SA.

The association believes that NAP will encourage global brands to collaborate with experienced local vendors and maintain a balanced market. It will safeguard the livelihoods of thousands of skilled workers within the current automotive vendor framework.
