Mazda 6e EV: A new challenger for Tesla Model 3

Mazda 6e EV: A new challenger for Tesla Model 3

Mazda has stepped up its EV game by introducing the Mazda 6e at the Brussels Motor Show. It is the European version of the Mazda EZ-6, the midsize sedan BEV unveiled in China last year.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the range of the Mazda 6e?

Equipped with either a 68.8kWh or 80kWh battery pack, the Mazda 6e offers a driving range between 479 km- 552 km.
  • How much does the Mazda 6e cost?

The automaker has not yet announced the Mazda 6e pricing.
  • Developed in collaboration with Changan Mazda, the new EV combines Mazda’s signature design, craftsmanship, and driving performance with Changan Automobile’s electrification and smart-cabin technologies.

Set to hit the UK roads in 2026, the Mazda 6e is set to rival the likes of the Tesla Model 3. Let’s know how it stacks up against the Tesla EV -

    Dimensions

The Mazda 6e measures 4,921 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,491 mm in height and spans a wheelbase of 2895 mm. Compared to the Tesla Model 3, it is 200 mm longer, 43 mm shorter, 50 mm taller, and has a 20 mm longer wheelbase.

    Exterior

In terms of design, the Mazda EV boasts a sleek profile with a liftback rear end, which offers more practicality when it comes to cargo space. The Tesla Model 3, on the other hand, has a bit of a traditional-type design with a fixed boot lid, which emphasizes its minimalist design.

The Mazda 6e underpins the brand’s ‘Soul of Motion’ design philosophy with an LED-framed grille, a long bonnet, and sharp LED lights. Adding to the dynamic appearance are frameless door glass, a low roofline, 19-inch wheels, eye-catching round tail lights, and a full-width light strip. There is also an active rear spoiler that automatically goes up at 56 mph.

    Drivetrain, range, and charging

The Mazda 6e will come equipped with a rear-mounted motor in two power tunes - 244 PS or 258 PS, both with a peak torque of 320 Nm. In terms of performance, the EV runs from zero to 100 kmph in 7.6 seconds.

The motor is fed by either a 68.8kWh LFP or 80kWh NCM battery pack, offering a driving range of 479 km and 552 km, respectively. If we talk about charging time, the battery can juice up from 10 to 80% in just 22 minutes with the help of a 200 kW fast charger.

In contrast, the popular Tesla Model 3 comes in single and dual-motor setups, generating a maximum power of  260 hp and 460 hp, respectively. The top-spec Performance trim hits the century sprint in just 3.1 seconds and attains a top speed of 262 kmph. As for the battery, it comes with a 62.5 kWh LFP unit, offering a WLTP-claimed range of approx 600 km.

    Interior

The electric sedan has a premium cabin design, focusing on passengers’ comfort and convenience. It is equipped with advanced tech features, intuitive controls, and high-quality materials. Some of the highlights include -

    • 10.2-inch instrument cluster
    • 50-inch augmented-reality head-up display
    • 14.6-inch infotainment unit supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
    • A smaller touchscreen for the rear passengers to manage climate settings, operate the sunshade etc.

The Tesla EV features a more minimalist cabin design with a central touchscreen-focused layout, offering a futuristic driving experience.

    Safety

Mazda has packed the EV with several active and passive safety systems, including nine airbags and an i-Activesense ADAS pack. The latter comprises Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Emergency Lane Keeping, Traffic Sign Recognition, Occupancy Monitoring System, Rear Collision Warning, and Smart Brake Support.

Tesla EV is not at all behind in safety as it offers advanced features like Autopilot and a suite of active safety systems, ensuring top-notch protection for occupants.

    Conclusion

The upcoming Mazda 6e seems to be a strong contender in the electric saloon market, poised to give one of the world’s best-selling EVs a tough run for its money.
