Mercedes-Benz CLA 200 and GLC EV previewed for Malaysia: 10 things to know, prices estimated from RM275k

KUALA LUMPUR: Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has previewed two new models, weirdly in Singapore: the locally assembled CLA 200 AMG Line and the fully electric GLC 300 4MATIC.

Both are now available for pre-booking, with estimated starting prices of RM275,000 and RM389,000, respectively.

The CLA offers a petrol-hybrid alternative to the recently launched electric CLA, while the GLC brings an electric drivetrain to the brand’s familiar SUV nameplate.

There is plenty of screen space and illuminated trim between them, but the more useful details concern how they drive, charge and accommodate passengers. Here are 10 things to know about the new Mercedes-Benz CLA 200 and electric GLC in Malaysia.

1. There are two variants for the GLC EV, one for the CLA

The CLA arrives in a single CLA 200 AMG Line specification, while electric GLC buyers have two equipment lines to choose from.

These are estimated pre-booking prices, rather than final launch prices.

The CLA 200 is confirmed as locally assembled. For the electric GLC, the production is at Mercedes-Benz’s Bremen plant in Germany.

Mercedes-Benz also lists an F1 Party incentive for each model: the first 100 customers who pre-book the CLA, and the first 100 who pre-book the electric GLC, will receive passes to an upcoming exclusive Mercedes-AMG F1 Party, subject to terms and conditions.

2. The CLA 200 combines a 1.5-litre engine with electric assistance

The CLA 200 uses a 1,499 cc petrol engine, an electric motor integrated into an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, and a 48-volt lithium-ion battery with an energy content of up to 1.3 kWh.

The engine produces approximately 163 PS and 250 Nm, while quoted system output is approximately 184 PS and 330 Nm.

That makes this CLA a petrol-hybrid option alongside the fully electric model already introduced in Malaysia.

3. The CLA can move on electric power during gentle town driving

The electric motor does more than help the petrol engine accelerate.

Mercedes-Benz says the CLA can drive on electric power alone at urban speeds when less than 22 kW is required. Think gentle progress through town, where the driver is asking relatively little of the drivetrain, lets say in a crawling traffic jam.

It can also perform what Mercedes calls “electric sailing”, coasting with the drivetrain decoupled at speeds of up to approximately 100 km/h. That should not be confused with a claim that it can sustain electric-only driving at 100 km/h.

Energy recovery is available in all eight gears, with recuperation of up to 25 kW.

Mercedes-Benz quotes fuel consumption of around five litres per 100 km and below, although the release does not identify the test cycle for that statement. It remains a manufacturer claim rather than a Malaysian road-test result.

4. The electric GLC has approximately 421 PS and two forward gears

Both electric GLC variants carry the GLC 300 4MATIC designation. Mercedes-Benz quotes an output of 310 kW, equivalent to approximately 421 PS, and a top speed of 210 km/h.

Electric drive units serve the front and rear axles. The front unit can be connected or disconnected as required, helping the car balance traction requirements with efficiency.

There is also a two-speed transmission at the rear. First gear uses an 11:1 ratio to support acceleration and towing, while the taller 5:1 second gear is intended for efficiency and power delivery at higher speeds.

Gear changes depend on the driving situation and selected driving programme. The quoted top speed is reached in second gear.

The supplied GLC release does not list torque or a 0–100 km/h time for this version.

5. The GLC offers up to 616 km WLTP range and 320 kW DC charging

The electric GLC has a battery with 85 kWh of usable capacity and a quoted driving range of up to 616 km WLTP.

Its 800-volt electrical architecture supports DC charging at up to 320 kW, while AC charging goes up to 22 kW.

Mercedes-Benz says up to 255 km of WLTP range can be added in ten minutes under suitable charging conditions. The amount actually recovered will depend on factors including the charger, battery temperature and starting charge level.

Navigation can plan charging stops and prepare the battery ahead of arrival through preconditioning. Drivers can activate preconditioning manually too.

A less visible detail concerns servicing: the battery’s electrical and electronics unit can be accessed from underneath, while the battery cover is screwed into place rather than glued. This allows certain repairs without dismantling the entire battery unit.

6. The CLA gets a Superscreen; the GLC gets a Hyperscreen

Both cars use MB.OS and fourth-generation MBUX, but their dashboard displays differ.

Both offer Google Maps-based navigation and a voice assistant that integrates AI technology from Microsoft and Google. The assistant is designed to handle follow-up questions without requiring the user to repeat the entire conversation.

The GLC also brings back a physical volume roller and a rocker switch for the speed limiter and DISTRONIC on its steering wheel.

Some connected functions are supplied as Digital Extras. These require an account and a linked vehicle, with paid renewals potentially applying after the initial included period.

7. Both have illuminated grilles, but the details differ

The petrol-hybrid CLA closely resembles its electric sibling. One of the distinguishing features is its conventional radiator grille, which combines a central star and chrome Mercedes-Benz pattern with an illuminated surround.

The CLA 200 AMG Line also gets 19-inch AMG five-twin-spoke wheels, MULTIBEAM LED headlights, animated surround-light projections and a panoramic roof.

Five exterior colours are listed: cosmic black, polar white, high-tech silver, sheer blue and aqua mint.

The electric GLC takes the lighting further. Its grille incorporates 942 backlit polycarbonate dots, alongside an illuminated central star and outline. DIGITAL LIGHT headlights and rear lamps with star-shaped graphics complete the lighting arrangement.

The GLC AVANTGARDE rides on 20-inch wheels, while the AMG Line Plus gets 21-inch AMG wheels and an additional AMG spoiler lip.

8. The CLA gets sports seats, while the GLC offers two cabin treatments

The CLA 200 comes with the AMG Line Sports Seat Package, ARTICO upholstery with MICROCUT microfibre, light carbon-grain aluminium trim and a nappa leather multifunction sports steering wheel.

It also has THERMOTRONIC climate control, allowing the driver and front passenger to set their temperatures individually.

For the electric GLC, the trim choice changes both the seats and cabin finish.

The GLC’s SKY CONTROL panoramic roof has nine individually adjustable sections that can switch between transparent and opaque. It also incorporates 162 illuminated stars, with lighting that can match the cabin’s ambient colour setting.

9. The electric GLC gains rear legroom and a sizeable frunk

The electric GLC has a 2,972 mm wheelbase, which is 80 mm longer than the combustion-engine GLC’s.

Mercedes-Benz says this translates into 47 mm more rear legroom and 13 mm more front legroom. Headroom increases by 46 mm at the front and 17 mm at the rear.

The rear backrests fold electrically in a 40:20:40 split, while the Boot Comfort Package allows the loading floor to be lowered by 80 mm to accommodate taller items.

The CLA release does not provide equivalent passenger-space or luggage-capacity figures.

10. Both offer driving and parking assistance; the GLC adds TERRAIN mode

Both list Distance Assist DISTRONIC and MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST 360 as one of their features.

The GLC’s specified MB.DRIVE ASSIST package adds Steering Assist and Lane Change Assist, providing SAE Level 2 assistance. The driver still has to supervise the car.

Mercedes-Benz also describes up to 11 airbags, PRE-SAFE functions and an MBUX dashcam for the electric GLC.

For dirt or gravel roads, its TERRAIN mode engages the front drive unit and adjusts drivetrain, steering and braking settings. A “transparent bonnet” camera function creates a virtual view beneath the front of the vehicle to help the driver position it around obstacles.

The CLA release gives less detail about its individual assistance functions, so the GLC’s full list should not automatically be applied to the smaller car.
