Proton launches X90 hybrid SUV in South Africa

KUALA LUMPUR: Launched only a few months ago, the all-new Proton X90 has proved its mettle in Malaysia by grabbing the title of the best-selling D-segment SUV in July. Well, the X90 is now set to rule the export markets as the automaker has started exporting the hybrid SUV in South Africa with Mauritius and Brunei following suit.

Proton South Africa offers the three-row SUV in four variants - Standard, Executive, Premium, and Flagship, priced between ZAR 589,900 (RM 147k) and ZAR 679,900 (RM 170k). Included in the price is a five-year unlimited-mileage warranty against manufacturing defects.

In terms of mechanical setup, the X90 available in South Africa mimics the Malaysia-spec model. That means, it is powered by the same 1.5-litre inline-three TGDi petrol mill, which kicks out a maximum power of 177 PS at 5,500 rpm and a peak torque of 255 Nm from 1,500 to 4,000 rpm. 

The engine comes mated to a 48-volt mild hybrid system that assists in raising the overall system output to over 190 PS and 300 Nm. The power is sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission.

Depending on the variant picked, the hybrid SUV comes equipped with LED projector headlamps, LED daytime running lights, LED front fog lights, 19-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, a powered tailgate, 10-inch digital instrument cluster, 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, Nappa leather upholstery, power-adjustable seats with ventilation function, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a 360-degree camera, dual-zone climate control, and remote engine start.

The advanced safety pack comprises adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, auto park assist, auto high beam, and four parking sensors. 

Proton South Africa offers the X90 in several exciting tones, including Snow, White, Jet Grey, Armour Silver, Cinnamon Brown, Marine Blue, and Ruby Red.
