Tesla Cybertruck to start tri-motor production in 2021

KUALA LUMPUR: Tesla has experienced a strong response in terms of bookings for its all-new Cybertruck. The reports state that Tesla has revamped the production timelines for both the trims levels of the Cybertruck.

The production of the affordable trim that comes with a price tag of US$39,900 (RM166,360) and features rear-wheel-drive and single-motor has been pushed to the year 2022. However, the production of the range-topping Cybertruck has been carried forward to 2021, which is one year prior to the date that Tesla had initially declared.

This model comes equipped with three-motor, and the power is sent to the wheels via the all-wheel-drive system. It is priced at US$69,900 (RM291,500), which is significantly expensive compared to the base model. This move seems to serve as the carmaker’s release tactics used for the Model 3 sedan, which also experienced the more costly trims to get introduced to the buyers early in the car’s lifecycle, before the production of base trim, said the report.

The reports added that Tesla had encountered minimum 250,000 refundable US$100 (RM415) pre-orders since the model was revealed in November. In addition to that, the electric carmaker has claimed before the launch of Cybertruck that it would be much more capable and robust than the Ford F-150. The electric pick-up suitably made a short demonstration of a tug-of-war that flaunts both the two competing trucks.

However, it was not transparent which trim of F-150 was employed in the presentation; the most capable twin-cab (Supercrew) that comes with the 3.5 litre EcoBoost V6 mill has a rated towing capacity of around 5,902 kg or 13,000 lb.

Comparing it to the Cybertruck, the EV has a towing capacity of 6,350 kg and a payload capacity of up to 1,590 kg. The CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, has said that a smaller variant of the Cybertruck can be introduced in the future.
