2020 Proton X70 engine to be mated with 7-speed wet DCT

KUALA LUMPUR: The new and upcoming SUV scheduled to add in the fleet of the Malaysian automaker will come with the Volvo’s 7-speed wet DCT (dual-clutch transmission) instead of the 6-speed automatic gearbox. Developed by Volvo and Geely, the 7-speed DCT can be seen fitted inside the Volvo XC40 and the latest models range of Lynk & Co and Geely models.

The new Proton X70 will be locally assembled and feature a 1.8-litre four-cylinder, direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine. On the other side, the Volvo and Geely models have a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged power mill under the bonnet that’s mated to a 7-speed DCT.

With the new transmission coupled with the engine, the new X70 will now be able to generate 300 Nm of peak torque between a range of 1,750 and 4,000 rpm, while the max power produced remains the same at 183 PS at 5,500 rpm. Aside from this, Proton has made some significant improvements to the car’s emission equipment, complying it now with the new Euro 6d regulations.

The new transmission has bumped the fuel efficiency of the SUV, though by a bit from earlier claimed 12.8 Kmpl to 13.3 Kmpl now, for a front-wheel-drive model. However, you can expect some discrepancies in the actual value to get in the real world driving conditions.

X70 SUV SIDE-REAR PROFILE

Aside from the new gearbox, we are also expecting the new X70 to come with features like an electronic tailgate, a new roundel badge on the outside (front), and a smaller electronic shift lever to match with the new DCT.

The launch of the CKD X70 is not very far and as we approach closer, we are likely to get more information about the model from the automaker. Stay tuned with us for related updates.
