2022 Subaru BRZ made its debut in Japan

KUALA LUMPUR: While we have already seen the all-new Subaru BRZ in North American specification back in November, here comes the Japan market version of the sports coupe. The automaker recently unveiled the new iteration through a press conference in Japan along with Toyota, which unveiled its twin, i.e., the new GR 86 on the same stage. 

So, what’s all new in the Japanese BRZ?

For Japanese customers, Subaru swapped the location of the steering wheel as necessary, brought a slightly powerful motor on board, and added an array of STI-branded accessories to the model’s specs sheet.

Powering the new Japan-spec BRZ is a naturally aspirated 2.4-litre flat-four motor, just like the North American model; however, it churns out an extra 4 horsepower at 232 hp and a peak torque of 250 Nm. It sends the power to the wheels via a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic gearbox system.

In terms of styling, the Japanese BRZ is identical to the US version on the exterior, although the coupe’s interior features some differences including a larger infotainment screen with touch buttons. As for safety, it gets the same suite of active safety technologies on automatic models, bundling adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and blind-spot monitoring. The car is fitted with seven airbags - dual front, front side, curtain, and driver's knees. 

As mentioned above, Subaru also rolled out aesthetic accessories for the new BRZ. These include a fixed carbon-fibre rear wing, 18-inch forged BBS alloy wheels, and an STI-badged strut brace under the bonnet. Some other STI add-ons are LED front fog lights, a pair of fancy vortex generators on the roof, a rear spoiler, an extended black front splitter, a louder sports exhaust system, and a side vent decked up with the STI badge. 

The 2022 Subaru BRZ is set to hit the Japanese showrooms in the summer of this year. However, for US customers, it will be available on sale in the fall. About the 2022 Subaru BRZ price, no information is available as of now, we hope the automaker will release pricing closer to the launch, so stay tuned.
