KLIMS 2026: Honda Prelude officially launched in Malaysia, priced at RM 278,000
KUALA LUMPUR: Honda Malaysia has officially launched the all-new Prelude at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show 2026, ending months of anticipation since bookings opened in April this year. The sixth-generation Prelude arrives as a single variant priced at RM 278,000, making it one of the most significant Honda launches in Malaysia in recent years.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
How much does the Honda Prelude cost?
The Honda Prelude is priced at RM 278,000 (on the road without insurance) in Malaysia. Is the Honda Prelude a sports car?
The Prelude is a grand tourer that prioritises refined, comfortable long-distance driving while still offering genuine driving engagement when you want it, particularly with the S+ Shift system activated.KLIMS 2026 is being held from 12 to 21 June at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre in Kuala Lumpur, and Honda's decision to use the platform for the Prelude's official debut is a statement in itself. The motor show, themed "Beyond Mobility", is the biggest automotive gathering in Malaysia this year, and the Prelude is arguably one of its headline acts.

What it is
The Prelude is a 2+2 coupe powered by Honda's Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive hybrid system. The setup pairs an Atkinson-cycle 2.0-litre inline-four petrol engine producing 141 PS at 6,000 rpm and 182 Nm at 4,500 rpm with a traction motor that outputs 184 PS and 315 Nm to the front wheels, with a combined system output of 203 PS.
Also making its Malaysian debut alongside the Prelude is Honda's S+ Shift technology, which allows the hybrid powertrain to mimic the feel of an eight-speed gearbox by making the engine rev in sync with simulated shifts, even though it is not directly connected to the wheels.

At RM278,000, the Prelude slots into an interesting position in the Malaysian market. It sits between the Civic RS at RM167,000 and the Civic Type R at RM399,900, which broadly reflects Honda Malaysia's intention to position it as a step above the everyday Civic but below the all-out performance of the Type R.
The pricing is also competitive when viewed against the broader regional picture. Indonesia, the first market outside Japan to open pre-bookings for the Prelude, saw the car priced at around IDR 1 billion, approximately RM236,000 to RM240,000. Malaysia's RM278,000 price tag is higher, which is consistent with the country's CBU import duty structure for a 1,993cc engine, which typically includes a 30% import duty and an 80% excise duty applied sequentially, followed by a 10% sales tax.
In the United States, the Prelude starts at USD43,195, a single trim that Honda describes as well-equipped, bringing features that would be optional or unavailable on the Civic sedan entirely.

The Prelude comes as a single fully loaded variant with Honda Sensing as standard, covering adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, forward collision warning, collision mitigation braking, and a lead car departure notification system. The chassis borrows technology directly from the Civic Type R programme, including a dual-axis strut front suspension, adaptive dampers, and Brembo four-pot calipers with large two-piece discs up front.
Three drive modes are available, Comfort, GT, and Sport, with the adaptive dampers adjusting the character of the car across all three. The S+ Shift system can be toggled independently for an added layer of engagement regardless of drive mode selected.
Honda Malaysia has confirmed one variant only for the local market, which simplifies the buying decision considerably.
We drove the Prelude at Sepang International Circuit ahead of this launch, and our honest assessment is that this is not the sports car the name might suggest. It is a GT car, refined and composed by default, alive and engaging when you ask for it. At RM278,000, it asks buyers to pay for a very specific kind of experience, one that prioritises daily comfort and long-distance refinement with the option of genuine driver engagement when the mood calls for it.
Whether that is worth a quarter of a million ringgit is a question only buyers can answer. But as a statement of intent from Honda Malaysia, the Prelude's return is a confident one.
The Honda Prelude is now on sale at Honda Malaysia showrooms nationwide, priced at RM 278,000 on the road without insurance.
