KUALA LUMPUR: Proton has released a new collection of official images showing what seems to be the upcoming S70 Prime, giving us a clearer look at the better-equipped version of its more affordable naturally aspirated sedan ahead of the official launch.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What engine does the Proton S70 Prime use?

The Proton S70 Prime uses a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder i-GT petrol engine. It is reported to produce 120 PS and 150 Nm, although Proton has not released its complete technical specifications.
  • What transmission does the Proton S70 Prime have?

The naturally aspirated S70 Prime uses a continuously variable transmission, or CVT, driving the front wheels. Further technical details about the transmission have not been officially announced.
  • How much will the Proton S70 Lite and Prime cost?

Proton has only confirmed that prices will start below RM60,000. Unofficial information suggests RM55,000 to RM59,000 for the Lite and RM65,000 to RM69,000 for the Prime, but final prices will be announced at launch.

Bookings for the S70 Prime and the cheaper S70 Lite opened nationwide on September 7. Proton has not announced the final prices, but it has confirmed that the new S70 range will start from below RM60,000.

The naturally aspirated Prime retains the familiar S70 bodywork rather than introducing a major exterior redesign. Its front end is distinguished by a predominantly black grille, without the brighter silver detailing currently used on the turbocharged variants.

As the better-equipped naturally aspirated variant, the Prime comes with automatic LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, auto-folding side mirrors and 17-inch alloy wheels.

At the back, it adopts a simpler lighting arrangement without the full-width rear light bar. An i-GT badge on the boot identifies the naturally aspirated powertrain underneath.

Both the S70 Prime and Lite are powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder i-GT engine. This engine is reported to produce 120 PS and 150 Nm, matching the output of the same basic engine used in the latest Proton Saga.

That represents a considerable reduction from the turbocharged S70’s 181 PS and 290 Nm, although the naturally aspirated engine still produces 11 PS more than the outgoing Persona’s 1.6-litre unit.

Proton has confirmed that the engine will be paired with a CVT, replacing the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission used by the turbocharged S70. Further technical details about the CVT, including its supplier, internal construction and simulated ratios, have not been officially released.

Inside, the S70 Prime receives an analogue instrument cluster and an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Its Prime-specific upgrades include leatherette upholstery, a leatherette-wrapped steering wheel and automatic air-conditioning. Other equipment shared across the naturally aspirated range includes keyless entry, push-button start, remote engine start, an electric parking brake with Auto Hold, five USB ports and auto up/down windows with anti-trap protection.

The S70 Prime’s safety equipment includes six airbags, electronic stability control, a reverse camera and front and rear parking sensors.

Its Rear Side Radar System provides Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Door Opening Warning and Rear Collision Warning. A rear-seat reminder is also included.

However, the Prime does not appear to receive Proton’s front-facing advanced driver-assistance systems. Autonomous Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keep Assist are not included in the disclosed equipment list.

Proton has not announced the final prices for either variant, only confirming that the S70 range will start from below RM60,000.

Unofficial information points to an estimated price of between RM55,000 and RM59,000 for the S70 Lite, while the better-equipped S70 Prime could cost between RM65,000 and RM69,000. These figures remain provisional and should be treated as unofficial until the launch.

What Proton is offering appears relatively straightforward: a familiar S70 with a simpler naturally aspirated powertrain and a lower entry price. The Prime adds enough comfort and convenience equipment to avoid feeling like a bare-bones model, while retaining the S70’s established size, cabin and road presence.

Whether it represents good value will ultimately depend on the final price—particularly if the Prime lands close to the existing turbocharged S70.

Customers who book and register an S70 Lite or Prime by December 31, 2026 will qualify for an early-bird reward. Proton will reveal the details of that reward, together with the final prices and full technical specifications, at the official launch.
