    2.5-litre hybrid, 217 PS, 4.7 L/100 km

Under the bonnet sits Toyota’s A25A-FXS 2.5-litre four-cylinder Dynamic Force engine, paired with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery as part of the brand’s fourth-generation hybrid system.

The petrol engine produces 178 PS at 5,700 rpm and 221 Nm between 3,600 and 5,200 rpm. The electric motor contributes 88 kW and 202 Nm, bringing total system output to 217 PS.

Drive is sent to the front wheels via an e-CVT transmission. Toyota quotes a combined fuel consumption figure of 4.7 litres per 100 km (NEDC cycle), with a top speed of 180 km/h.

Drivers can toggle between Eco, Normal and Sport modes, alongside an EV mode that allows short-distance electric-only driving at low speeds.

As with other Toyota hybrids, the system automatically switches between EV drive, hybrid drive and engine drive depending on conditions. The engine cuts out at idle, and energy is recuperated during braking to recharge the battery.

    TNGA platform, double wishbone rear

The Harrier rides on Toyota’s TNGA-K platform. Up front is a MacPherson strut setup, while the rear uses a trailing wishbone configuration with stabilisers at both ends. Braking is handled by ventilated discs at the front and solid discs at the rear.

Kerb weight is listed at 1,695 kg, and at 4,740 mm long with a 2,690 mm wheelbase, the Harrier sits in that mid-size five-seat SUV footprint, the kind of size Malaysians usually cross-shop against cars like the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 / CX-8, Kia Sportage, and Hyundai Tucson.

It’s also not far off the Toyota Fortuner in overall length, although the Fortuner is a taller, ladder-frame seven-seater with a very different vibe.

The turning radius is 5.5 metres, while the fuel tank capacity stands at 55 litres. Rolling stock consists of 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 225/60R18 tyres, with a temporary spare included.

    Exterior, familiar

As usual, the Harrier keeps a clean, understated design. Lighting is fully LED, including automatic Bi-LED projector headlamps, LED daytime running lights, front and rear fog lamps and LED rear combination lamps. An Adaptive High Beam System is part of the package.

Wing mirrors are auto-retractable and come with integrated turn signals, puddle lamps and a welcome light function. A fixed panoramic moonroof is fitted as standard, along with a power tailgate that features a kick sensor for hands-free access. At the rear, dual oval exhaust outlets complete the look.

Colour choices for Malaysia include Platinum White Pearl, Grey Metallic and Precious Black.

Interior, comfort is the main theme

Inside, the Harrier leans heavily into comfort. The driver gets a 12-way power-adjustable seat with two-position memory, while the front passenger has four-way power adjustment. Both front seats are ventilated and heated. The rear bench splits 60:40, reclines and comes with a centre armrest and cupholders.

The dashboard houses a 12.3-inch colour TFT multi-information display, complemented by a 10.5-inch colour head-up display. An 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto-ready connectivity. There are six speakers in total.

Convenience features include a Qi-compatible wireless charger, five USB-C ports throughout the cabin, smart entry with push start, and a digital rear-view mirror that displays a camera feed for a wider and clearer rear view, especially useful when the boot is fully loaded.

Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard, complete with rear air vents, S-FLOW control and nanoe™ X air purification. Ambient and functional lighting covers the cabin extensively, including map lights, dome lamps, footwell lighting, glovebox illumination and illuminated scuff plates.

Safety, full Toyota Safety Sense and more

The Harrier HEV is equipped with Toyota Safety Sense. This includes a Pre-Collision System with detection for pedestrians, bicyclists and oncoming vehicles, Lane Departure Alert with steering assist and road edge detection, Lane Tracing Assist, and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control that works at all speeds and features curve speed management. Road Sign Assist displays information in both the instrument cluster and head-up display.

An Adaptive High Beam System enhances night driving visibility.

Beyond that, the SUV comes with a Panoramic View Monitor for a 360-degree camera view, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, front and rear Intelligent Clearance Sonar, and Parking Support Brake that can apply the brakes automatically at low speeds. A front and rear digital video recorder is also built in.

Seven airbags are fitted, covering driver, passenger, side, curtain and driver’s knee protection. Standard stability and brake systems include ABS, EBD, Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Hill-start Assist and Emergency Stop Signal. A Tyre Pressure Monitoring System displays individual tyre readings.

    Warranty and ownership support

The Harrier HEV is covered by a five-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty. Hybrid components, including the battery, inverter and power management control ECU, are covered for eight years with unlimited mileage, with an option to extend hybrid coverage by a further two years.

A Vehicle Telematics System is included, allowing owners to monitor real-time vehicle location via a mobile application.

At RM289,000, the new Toyota Harrier HEV positions itself as a premium, comfort-focused SUV that leans on Toyota’s hybrid maturity rather than dramatic styling or headline-grabbing performance figures.

For buyers who want a quiet, well-equipped five-seater with low fuel consumption and a long hybrid warranty story, this is Toyota’s answer.
