Chery Tiggo Cross HEV to debut at MAS 2025 – Hybrid SUV with 1,000 km range

KUALA LUMPUR:  Chery Malaysia is set to pull the wraps off its newest compact hybrid SUV, the Chery Tiggo Cross HEV, at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025 this week.

Previously known under the Tiggo 4 nameplate, the model has now been officially rebranded as the Tiggo Cross for the local market—signalling a market-specific approach that may set it apart from its global siblings.

Tiggo Cross HEV: A “Super Hybrid” Built for Malaysian Roads

This preview is part of Chery’s broader “Super Hybrid” showcase, which aims to spotlight the brand’s advanced petrol-electric technologies.

Under the hood, the Tiggo Cross HEV features a 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle engine paired with dual electric motors, delivering a combined 201 hp and 310 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the wheels via an efficient Direct Hybrid Transmission (e-CVT).

With this setup, Chery claims fuel consumption as low as 5.4L/100 km and a hybrid driving range of up to 1,000 km, making the Tiggo Cross HEV ideal for city driving with EV-like efficiency—minus the charging hassle. It uses a compact 1.83 kWh battery, emphasizing efficiency rather than full-electric operation.

Rivals and Market Positioning in the A-Segment SUV Space

Although positioned as a compact SUV, the Tiggo Cross HEV’s hybrid drivetrain puts it in a more premium light compared to non-hybrid competitors like the Perodua Ativa and Honda WR-V.

With more power and better fuel economy, it may appeal to buyers looking for performance without sacrificing efficiency.

However, Chery’s challenge will be to convince buyers of its long-term value proposition, especially when after-sales support and dealer confidence are still growing areas compared to long-established rivals.

Chery Tiggo 4 Pro Scores Five Stars in ANCAP Safety Rating

Adding to its appeal is the safety credibility of its global counterpart. The Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, recently earned a five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

Although the Tiggo 4 Pro itself wasn’t crash-tested directly, its rating is based on results from the Tiggo 7 Pro, tested in late 2023. ANCAP supplemented this with additional assessments—such as autonomous emergency braking and lane support functions—to verify the rating's applicability.

The Malaysia Autoshow 2025 will provide the first public glimpse of the Tiggo Cross HEV ahead of its official launch. While full specifications and variant breakdowns are still under wraps, this showcase will be a key test of how Malaysian consumers respond to Chery’s hybrid direction.

By adopting the “Tiggo Cross” name and emphasizing fuel efficiency, strong performance, and urban practicality, Chery appears to be targeting younger buyers and urban families who want modern tech in a familiar format.
