Top 7 SUVs coming to Malaysia in 2024
With the introduction of several new SUV models in 2023, the Malaysian automotive industry experienced a surge in SUV popularity among consumers. Looking ahead to 2024, the trend is expected to continue as automakers are geared up to enhance their SUV lineup. Check out the list of SUVs slated to make a splash in the Malaysian market next year.
Chery Tiggo 7 Pro
The Chinese automaker Chery made a great comeback to Malaysia with the launch of two new models - Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro. The next model in line to land on the local shores is the Tiggo 7 Pro. It is a C-segment SUV that squares up against the Proton X70, and Honda CR-V. Based on the Chery T1X platform, the SUV is equipped with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo engine, which churns out 147 PS of maximum power and 210 Nm of peak torque. The engine comes mated to a CVT gearbox sending power to the front wheels.
Chery Tiggo 4 Pro
Another Chery model that is earmarked to launch in Malaysia next year is the Tiggo 4 Pro. Just like the Omoda 5, it is also a B-segment SUV, but it is 82 mm shorter than the former. It is touted as the brand’s “most advanced SUV” and the “most competitively priced in its class”. In terms of drivetrain, it is offered in two options globally viz. a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated mill producing 111 PS and 138 Nm and 1.5-litre turbocharged unit good for making 147 PS and 210 Nm. Both are coupled with a continuously variable transmission.
2024 GAC GS3
The Chinese automaker GAC Motor is also set to initiate the local assembly of the second-gen GS3 in association with WTC Automotif (WTCA), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Warisan TC Holdings (Tan Chong Group). The CKD production will begin in April 2024 with sales expected to commence in the middle of the year.
Introduced in China in March, the next-gen GS3 is a completely new model based on the automaker’s latest GPMA (GAC Global Platform Modular Architecture) platform. It runs on a 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine tuned to deliver 177 PS and 270 Nm.
Jaecoo J7 AWD
Chery’s sub-brand Jaecoo will also make its way to Malaysia next year with the J7 AWD SUV. The two units of the SUV have already arrived in the country for road testing and exclusive previews for potential dealers and investors in anticipation of showrooms opening. The Jaecoo J7 AWD is a C-segment SUV based on the same T1X architecture that underpins the Tiggo 7 Pro. It comes with off-roading capabilities and a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine that kicks out 197 PS and 290 Nm of torque. The power is sent to all four wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
2024 Hyundai Santa Fe
Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors has started accepting bookings for the all-new Santa Fe, which is expected to launch next year. Based on a new platform, the upgraded Hyundai SUV is offered in three trims - Hybrid Plus, Hybrid Max, and Diesel Max.
The hybrid variants are powered by a 180 PS/265 Nm 1.6-litre T-GDI petrol engine and a 44.2 kW electric motor, combinedly producing 230 PS of maximum power and 350 Nm of peak torque. The diesel trim gets energy from a 2.2-litre CRDi diesel mill tuned to make 202 PS and 440 Nm. As for the transmission, the hybrid setup is hooked with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive system while the diesel one is linked to an eight-speed wet DCT and HTRAC all-wheel drive system.
Mazda CX-60
Globally introduced in March 2022, the Mazda CX-60 is currently available in several ASEAN markets, including the Philippines, Singapore, and Indonesia, which strongly hints at its impending arrival in Malaysia. The CX-60 is a five-seater SUV that falls under the brand’s Large Product group, which also includes the CX-80, CX-70, and CX-90.
Under the bonnet of the SUV lies a 3.3-litre inline-6 e-Skyactiv G mild-hybrid engine, which cranks out a maximum power of 280 PS and a peak torque of 450 Nm. The power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. A 3.3-litre diesel unit is also offered in the Philippines which generates 251 PS and 550 Nm.
2024 Mazda CX-5 facelift
The official distributor of Mazda cars, Bermaz Motor is also expected to introduce the facelifted CX-5 in 2024. Recently, eager enthusiasts and passersby alike have spotted the upgraded SUV on local roads, fuelling the excitement.
The new CX-5 boasts a number of cosmetic tweaks like a new front grille, newly designed headlights, and new tail lights. The interior also offers a more sophisticated design with high-class amenities. The engine options may include - a 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated inline four-cylinder, a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-pot, and a 2.0-litre SkyActiv-G naturally-aspirated petrol unit.
