Geely Binyue PHEV set to launch in China; might come to Malaysia as Proton X50 PHEV

KUALA LUMPUR: A plug-in hybrid version (PHEV) of Geely Binyue will make its debut in China by the end of May or early June. Now reports suggest that the vehicle may come to Malaysia as the Proton X50 PHEV, which makes sense in light of the partnership between Geely and Proton.

Geely Binyue PHEV

The original non-electric version of Geely Binyue was launched in the Chinese market late last year with two different powertrain options. However, it was recently that the carmaker released some photos of the Geely Binyue PHEV, where it was shown plugged to a charger via the port present on the front wing. The Binyue PHEV looks similar to its standard model, except the extra flap to cover the charging port and PHEV emblem at the tailgate.

Open the gate and you are welcomed to a cabin crafted with an excellent design, just as the standard model. A rotary knob is present that helps the driver to select between Hybrid or EV modes. Moreover, a “Save” battery button is also provided that provides a higher regeneration.

The Binyue PHEV’s powertrain is likely to be a combination of an electric motor, a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, and a battery pack. The power is sent to the wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The system is capable of churning out a maximum power of 255 hp along with a peak torque of 415 Nm. With this powerful combination under the hood, the SUV can speed up from 0 to 100 kmph in just 6.9 seconds. It provides an electric range of around 60 kilometres.

To recall, the standard Binyue is based on the BMA modular platform. It is available in two engine options that include a 1.5-litre mill and a 1.0-litre engine. The former pushes out a maximum power of 174 hp along with a peak torque of 255 Nm. It is mated to a DCT auto transmission. The later pumps out a maximum power of 134 hp, while the peak torque is at 205 Nm. The power is sent to the wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox.
