Honda HR-V - Buyer’s guide
Launched in 2015, the Honda HR-V got an overwhelming response by the Malaysians. Perhaps, that’s why it didn’t take long for Honda to give this new sub-compact crossover its first update in the early stage of its life. Since then, the HR-V continued to climb the charts of success and hence, got another update earlier this year.
Based on the Honda Jazz’s platform, the HR-V is putting up a tough fight against its rivals like the Mazda CX-3, Renault Captur, Peugeot 2008, Mitsubishi ASX, etc. And if you’re planning to buy it, here are all the details you would need.
What is the starting price of Honda HR-V?
Ans. Honda HR-V price starts at RM 108,800 for its base 1.8 L E variant. Following is a detailed price list of the HR-V for your better understanding-

How many engine options does the HR-V have and what mileage should one expect to get?
Ans. While going through the Honda HR-V specs, we found that there are two engine options available - 1.8-litre petrol and 1.5-litre hybrid petrol. Just like the Honda City and Honda Jazz, the HR-V, too, gets a hybrid variant which was introduced in Malaysia earlier this year. Regarding the mileage or fuel-efficiency, Honda claims that the hybrid variant would give around 22-23 km/l whereas the other non-hybrid variants would do 15-16 km to a litre.

How big is the Honda HR-V?
Ans. Since the HR-V is a subcompact crossover that has been built on the platform of Honda Jazz, it understandable that it isn’t a huge car. It is a 5-seater vehicle with a good amount of interior space and boot. Following are the dimensions of the car-
Overall Length (mm) |
4334 |
Overall Width (mm) |
1772 |
Overall Height (mm) |
1605 |
Wheelbase (mm) |
2610 |
Fuel Tank Capacity (Litre) |
50 |
Boot Capacity Rear Seat Up (Litre) |
437 / 404 |
The hybrid variant of the HR-V comes with a slightly smaller boot (404 litres) when compared to that of the other variants (437 litres).
When it comes to styling and looks, the HR-V should get full points. Honda’s design language makes its cars stand out from the rest of the crowd and the HR-V is no exception.
It gets full LED headlights that look like that of the Honda Civic. Of course, there’s the Honda’s signature grille, too. We also like the stylish alloy wheels, redesigned taillights and rear bumper.
Some of the other interesting exterior features are-
- LED daytime running lights
- LED front fog lights
- Sporty rear door handles
- Tailgate spoiler
If you want the sportiest-looking HR-V, then go for the RS variant.
How is HR-V’s interior like?
Ans. Honda claims that the HR-V has the class-leading interior space which is more than sufficient to easily accommodate 5 adults. Also, the leather seats (variant specific) provide utmost comfort and support making the overall experience that much better. Also, thanks to the low floor and wide opening of the boot, loading and unloading luggage is effortless.
To handle your entertainment needs, there’s a large 7-in touch screen display with HDMI, USB, AUX, and Bluetooth connectivity options and is connected to a 4-speaker system. The instrument console in the HR-V gets the job done but doesn’t really gel with the exterior design of the car.
Some of the other key interior features are-
- Smart Entry with Push Start Button
- ECON Button
- Power Adjustable Door Mirrors
- Power Retractable Door Mirrors
- Cruise Control
- Paddle Shift
- One-Touch Lane Change
- 8-Way Driver Power Seat
What are the key safety features in the Honda HR-V?
Ans. Considering the price and category, we think that the HR-V has been given a good number of safety features. Some of the key ones are-
- 6 airbags (2 front, 2 side, 2 side curtain)
- Honda LaneWatch Camera
- Hill Start Assist
- Multi-angle Rearview Camera
- Electric Parking Brake
- ABS with EBD
- Automatic Brake Hold
- Vehicle Stability Assist
The subcompact crossover segment has become pretty crowded with some really good options available. To maintain its status, Honda HR-V has to keep up with some of its major rivals like Renault Captur, Mazda CX-3, etc.
If you would ask which one is better, that’ll be a tough question to answer because each car here has something different to offer. For example, the HR-V has great looks but its interior lacks that enthusiasm which one would expect after looking at its exterior styling. On the other hand, the Captur has got things balanced on both the exterior and interior front.
