Honda Malaysia recalls 1999 Accord and 2000 CR-V over driver airbag issue

KUALA LUMPUR: In a recent recall notice, Honda Malaysia has called back a total of 2,784 cars; consisting of 1,380 Accord and 1,404 CR-V units. The recall concerns over the replacement of the Takata-built driver-side airbag.

It is to be noted that the said Honda recall is not part of the long-running Takata airbag scandal, but instead is part of the automaker’s global non-azide driver airbag inflator (NADI) recall.

The concerned NADI were built without proper seals, allowing the air and moisture to seep in, causing degradation of the propellant. This could lead to the slow or forceful deployment of the airbag in case of an accident, both causing serious injuries. The latter could damage and throw metal pieces at the driver or passengers.

Honda America reported one such rupture that took place in Texas, in 2012 and two incidents were reported in Japan when the cars were being scrapped. No such incident involving the two models have occurred in Malaysia. Also, Honda Malaysia assured its customers that the models sold currently are free from such a defect and are not part of the recall.

Honda Malaysia will soon be sending letters to the owners of the affected car, urging them to make an appointment at the nearest dealership to replace the affected part. Not the replacement is subject to part availability. The replacement of the driver’s airbag inflator is completely free with all costs borne by the automaker.

In order to ensure a smooth replacement process, Honda Malaysia is requesting the affected car owners to book an appointment in advance. It will not only make the replacement process quick but also ensure everyone’s safety during this pandemic.

Further, all Honda Malaysia dealerships will comply with the government-mandated SOPs (standard operating procedures), including maintaining physical distancing, wearing face masks, and frequently sanitising hands.
