Mercedes-Benz S 580 e updated in Malaysia – DC fast charging, new wheels, rear wheel steering, RM739k

KUALA LUMPUR: Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has updated its locally-assembled flagship, the S 580 e plug-in hybrid, bringing new features and upgrades three years on from its first Malaysian debut in 2022.

Originally launched in Malaysia in late 2021 (badged as a 2022 model), the W223 S 580 e was the sole S-Class variant available here, priced above the outgoing W222 S 560 e’s RM659k.

At the time, the model came with AC charging only, no rear-wheel steering, and rode on 19-inch multi-twin-spoke alloy wheels.

Fast forward to today, the updated S 580 e wears a bigger sticker price of RM738,888 on-the-road without insurance, but also brings meaningful upgrades in charging, equipment and comfort.

What’s new compared to 2022?

Charging: The 2022 model only supported AC charging via its 11 kW onboard charger. The 2025 refresh now adds DC fast charging at up to 60 kW, cutting charging time to just ~20 minutes (10–80%). This is arguably the most significant upgrade for everyday usability.

Rear-axle steering: Previously omitted, the S-Class in Malaysia now gets rear-axle steering of up to 4.5 degrees, improving manoeuvrability in tight spaces and enhancing stability on highways.

Wheels: The original local spec ran on 19-inch alloys; the update introduces 20-inch 10-twin-spoke forged wheels for a more commanding stance.

Interior finish: Where the launch model featured open-pore poplar wood and black crystal trim, the new update revises the centre console with a black dotted line and crystal-look finish.

Seat ventilation: Rear seats in 2022 already had heating, cooling and massage, but the 2025 car adds three-stage climatised front seats with integrated fans for both heating and ventilation.

Air quality: New to the spec is ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL, which uses advanced sensors to detect NOx, CO, and PM2.5 levels, automatically switching airflow to protect cabin occupants.

Mechanically, the drivetrain is unchanged. The 3.0-litre inline-six turbo with an integrated electric motor still delivers 510 hp and 750 Nm, good for 0–100 km/h in 5.2 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h.

The 28.6 kWh lithium-ion battery remains, with around 100 km of pure electric range available. As before, the electric motor contributes 110 kW and 440 Nm.

Dimensionally, the S 580 e continues as a long-wheelbase sedan (V223) measuring 5,289 mm in length, with plenty of aluminium in its construction to offset weight gains over the older W222.

The cabin still carries over the familiar 12.8-inch OLED portrait display and 12.3-inch 3D-effect digital cluster, along with MBUX rear entertainment screens, a Burmester 3D surround sound system, and the MBUX Interior Assistant gesture/eye-tracking functions introduced in 2022.

On the safety front, the Malaysian-spec S 580 e continues to be one of the best-equipped cars on sale. As before, it comes with 14 airbags (including rear frontal airbags and beltbags), adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking with cross-traffic assist, lane keeping assist, and a 360-degree parking camera.

Like its 2022 predecessor, the new S 580 e is assembled at Mercedes-Benz’s Pekan plant. The updated model now retails at RM738,888 (OTR without insurance), inclusive of an eight-year / 160,000 km warranty for the high-voltage battery.

The 2022 S 580 e was already one of the most advanced limousine on sale locally, offering plug-in hybrid power, 100 km of EV range, and a luxury-packed interior.

With the 2025 update, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has addressed key gaps by introducing DC fast charging, rear-axle steering, larger wheels, and cleaner cabin air tech — while keeping all the elements that made the launch model special.

For buyers, the flagship sedan has become not only more luxurious but also more practical in daily use, with faster charging and better urban manoeuvrability.
