New Mazda CX-8 launched in Japan with 2.5L turbo engine
KUALA LUMPUR: Mazda recently introduced a mid-life update to its CX-8 crossover in Japan, which got a new turbocharged engine, updated G-Vectoring Control System and a few trim changes. The automaker has now brought similar updates to its bigger crossover offering – the Mazda CX-8.
The updated Mazda CX-8 2018 draws power from a new turbocharged 2.5-litre SkyActiv-G four cylinder engine that is capable of developing 230 PS at 4,250 rpm and 420 Nm of peak torque at 2,000 rpm. Mazda claims that this turbocharged engine on the CX-8 can extract a fuel economy of 11.6 kmpl. However, this economy figure is in-line with the new Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) and thus practical fuel efficiency might be lower.
The aforementioned 2.5-litre four cylinder engine can be availed in a naturally aspirated guise as well. In this version, it develops 190 PS at 6,000 rpm and a peak torque of 252 Nm at 4,000 rpm. It also comes with cylinder deactivation technology which can shut down a cylinder in case the driving inputs don’t require more power, in order to enhance fuel efficiency figures. Mazda claims that the naturally aspirated 2.5-litre CX-8 can deliver a fuel economy of 12.4 kmpl.
Mazda has also carried over the 2.2-litre four cylinder SkyActiv-D turbocharged diesel engine without any changes. All three power plants come with a 6-speed SkyActiv-Drive automatic gearbox.
The new Mazda CX-8 is also equipped with a G-Vectoring Control Plus feature, which is standard on all variants. This new addition grants better cornering capabilities to the heavy crossover by applying mild brakes to the outside wheels in order to provide more stability. It also allows the car to exit corners faster and with more composure. Mazda claims that the G-VC Plus system helps in emergency maneuvers to avoid collisions by providing more control to the driver. It can also come in handy when taking the CX-8 on slippery surfaces.
Other feature additions and changes made to the new Mazda CX-8 include nighttime pedestrian detection, redesigned climate control system, repositioned front armrest for better comfort, and increased sound insulation for the cabin. The crossover also comes with an optional 360-degree camera, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, fresh 17-inch and 19-inch alloy wheel designs. The fully loaded L Package adds ventilated front seats, a 7-inch TFT LCD instrument display, a frameless rear-view mirror, and white LED ambient lighting to the Mazda CX-8’s feature list.
