KUALA LUMPUR: PROTON is tying in with the Malaysian government’s Matching Grant Programme for the Replacement of Old Vehicles by rolling out trade-in incentives across its entire current model line-up, aimed at owners of cars aged 20 years or older who scrap their vehicles and take home a new Proton.

Up to RM2,000, which supplements the incentive PROTON provides. The way it works is straightforward, scrap and remove an old 20-year-plus vehicle from the road, then get a Proton trade-in incentive that is matched by the government, up to RM2,000, to help lower the cost of a new car purchase.

Incentive amounts depend on the model you’re buying. Proton Saga and Proton e.MAS 5 customers can receive up to RM1,000 from PROTON, while other models in the range, including the new Proton X50, Proton X70, and Proton e.MAS 7, come with a RM2,000 Proton incentive.
With the government’s matching grant factored in, PROTON says the maximum total incentive customers can receive is RM2,000 for the Saga and e.MAS 5, and RM4,000 for the rest of the range.
PROTON positions the programme as part of the broader push to reduce the number of older cars still in circulation and replace them with newer vehicles that are safer, cleaner, and more efficient. It also ties into the company’s 2026 growth plans, where PROTON is targeting 200,000 units in sales, after saying it delivered a strong performance last year with volume growth outpacing total industry volume (TIV) growth by more than six times.
“PROTON is proud to be able to offer our customers even more value by being a partner in the Malaysian government’s Matching Grant Programme for the Replacement of Old Vehicles. This initiative will encourage the responsible replacement of old, unroadworthy vehicles and improve road safety while supporting the transition towards cleaner and more efficient mobility.
“The incentive offered by PROTON is an extension of the PROTON Xchange Programme launched in May 2025. Offering up to RM2,000 in over trade for customers who scrapped their old vehicles for a new Proton model, 4,344 transactions were made resulting in approximately RM8.68 million being given out towards the purchase of a new car by the end of 2025,” said Dr Li Chunrong, Chief Executive Officer, PROTON.
