Proton X50: Variants explained

Proton X50: Variants explained

After several rounds of leaks and teasers, the much-anticipated Proton X50 is officially previewed earlier this week. Riding on its elder brother's success, the X70, the upcoming SUV punches well above its class and likely to be priced competitively. Yes, the price of the X50 has not yet been revealed; even the automaker recently debunked the fake pricing of the SUV circulating over the internet.

Well, for that, we have to wait a little more, but till then, we can check out the Proton X50 variants, whose specifications have been revealed by the automaker. There will be four variants on offer, namely Standard, Executive, Premium, and Flagship. So how exactly each trim is different from the others, we are going to find out here.

Proton X50 Standard

Being the base variant of the X50, this would be the most affordable trim in the lineup. There are a bunch of standard features that remain common across the board. Starting with the exterior specifications, these include LED headlamps and DRLs, 17-inch alloy wheels, full carbon fibre-print body kit, and quad exhaust pipes. Moving to the cabin, the SUV gets fabric seats, a digital instrument cluster, an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with GKUI 19, and rear AC vents.

The said infotainment system comes with the "Hi Proton" voice assistant functionality and eSIM capabilities for always-on connected functions such as starting the engine, turning on the climate control, and the all-new Amaps system.

On the safety side, Proton X50 standard equipment covers four airbags (front and side), an electronic parking brake with auto brake hold, and a reverse camera.

Engine - Under the hood, the X50 Standard will be powered by a 1.5 litre turbocharged three-cylinder multi-port injection engine that is expected to churn out around 150 PS of maximum power and 226 Nm of peak torque. For transmission, the younger X50 borrowed X70's seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission sending power exclusively to the front wheels. It can handle much more torque and contributes significantly to the SUV's performance and mileage.

Colours - Snow White, Armour Silver, Ocean Blue

Proton X50 Executive

Moving on, the Executive variant sits at number two in the X50's lineup and gets some extra features apart from the ones that we have already mentioned above. And thus, it would be a bit more expensive than the Standard one, which is quite justifiable on the grounds of added specs. These include automatic headlamps, front fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, Leatherette seats, and six airbags (front, side, curtain).

Engine- The Proton X50 Executive will be powered by the same 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder MPI engine as the Standard variant.

Colours - Snow White, Armour Silver, Ocean Blue, Jet Grey, and Citric Orange

Proton X50 Premium

The next in the Proton X50 variants list is the Premium version, and as its name suggests, it gets some premium features. These include 18-inch alloy wheels with red brake callipers, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with GKUI 19, powered driver's seat, tyre pressure monitoring system, and a 360-degree camera.

Engine - The Proton X50 Premium will be fitted with the standard mechanical setup.

Colours - Snow White, Armour Silver, Ocean Blue, Jet Grey, Citric Orange, and Passion Red.

Proton X50 Flagship

As a range-topping variant, the Proton X50 Flagship version gets some add-ons to justify its position and price. The added features are a dual-tone exterior for black roof and pillars, Panoramic sunroof, and Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assistance features (ADAS).

Engine- Under the hood, the X50 Flagship houses a more potent 1.5-litre turbocharged direct-injection three-cylinder engine producing 177 PS of maximum power and 255 Nm of torque. Although it gets the standard gearbox system.

Colours- Snow White, Armour Silver, Ocean Blue, Jet Grey, Citric Orange, and Passion Red.

So these were all four versions of Proton X50 whose production has already been started at the brand’s Tanjung Malim plant. With the plan to roll out 4000 units by the end of this year, the automaker has opened the bookings of the X50; you can book one by paying a booking fee of RM 500.

Proton is providing the chance to see the SUV in person through a "City Preview" starting from tomorrow. It is also running a slogan contest, in which participants can vote for the best slogan for the X50 out of the four provided choices.

Summing up

Combined with a capable engine, modern exterior, and interior styling, and lots of hi-tech features, the Proton X50 is set to be Proton's next success. However, it highly depends on the Proton X50 price. But, looking at its craze and hype in the market, we can say that the SUV will definitely shake the segment with its entry.
