Tesla Model 2 Hatchback reportedly in the works

KUALA LUMPUR: It is no secret that Tesla is working on bringing out the electric Cybertruck and next-gen Roadster on the road. But, today we heard a new model is also in the pipeline and that’s a compact hatchback rivaling the likes of the Volkswagen ID.3, Nissan Leaf, and Kia e-Niro. As per the Autocar report, Tesla entry-level hatchback is likely to be called Model 2 and will go on sale in 2023 at an expected price tag of US$25,000 (RM 103,813).

The upcoming Tesla car is said to underpin the marque's popular Model 3 sedan as the hatch is likely to be slotted below it in the product lineup.

The publication also reported that the upcoming EV will use new battery technology that will be able to store 5x more energy. This will lead to an increase in the range by 16% and allow a decrease in production cost by 50%. The Tesla hatchback will offer a WLTP range of around 402 km, the report says. Comparing this with the base-spec ID.3, the Volkswagen model delivers a lesser range i.e. 350 km.

As per Tesla CEO. Elon Musk, 402 km is the lowest acceptable cruise range for a Tesla car. Thus, we may expect a higher version of the hatchback with a longer range in true Tesla fashion.

Tesla Model 3

Back in 2020, Musk stated, "About three years from now, we're confident we can make a very compelling $25,000 electric vehicle that's also fully autonomous.” Connecting the statement with the new report, the Tesla Model 2 Hatchback will be offering all the latest driver assistance safety features along with a self-driving system. And, as it is a Tesla car, the entertainment and connected tech would also be top-class.

As for styling, the speculations hover around a Model 3-like look with a two-box silhouette and compact dimensions.

The report further tells that Tesla will be producing the upcoming model in China and in Germany, where its new facility will commence operations next year.
