TGR Racing Malaysia enters 2026 Thailand Super Series GT4 with Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2

KUALA LUMPUR: The Thailand Super Series (TSS) GT4 Class has grown into one of the most competitive production-based GT racing categories in Southeast Asia.

Over the past few seasons, the championship has established itself as the region’s leading national GT series, regularly drawing strong regional talent alongside experienced international drivers.

For the upcoming 2026 Thailand Super Series season, Toyota Gazoo Racing Malaysia for the first time will be fielding the Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2 in the GT4 Class.  lining up against a highly competitive grid that includes the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport,

Mercedes-AMG GT4 and Aston Martin Vantage GT4. The field will also feature no fewer than five additional Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2 race cars, making the category even more closely fought.

The Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2 enters the championship with a strong track record in the Thailand Super Series. The car secured the GT4 Class title in 2025, while the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport claimed the championship the year before in 2024. With several proven machines on the grid, the competition is expected to remain intense throughout the season.

For TGR Racing Malaysia, the campaign represents its first full season competing in the Thailand Super Series GT4 Class. The team enters the championship knowing it will be up against some of the region’s most experienced GT4 teams and drivers.

Rather than chasing immediate results, the team has set more measured objectives for its debut season. The focus will be on building experience, collecting valuable data from each race weekend, allowing the drivers to adapt to the new car, and understanding the vehicle’s strengths across different circuits and race conditions.

Leading the team’s two-car entry across the five-round Thailand Super Series calendar is an all-Malaysian driver line-up consisting of Shaun Thong, Weiron Tan, Putera Adam and Nazim Azman, bringing together a mix of experienced international racers and rising local talent.

At 31, Shaun Thong arrives as the most experienced driver in the squad. Over the course of his career he has accumulated more than 45 race victories, seven championship titles and over 250 race starts. Thong began making headlines at just 16 years old when he competed in the 2012 Asian Formula Renault series, taking a race win and finishing third overall in the championship.

He later progressed through several European single-seater categories including British Formula Renault, Formula Ford UK and Euroformula Open F3 before making the switch to GT racing in 2015. Among his notable achievements is finishing third at the 60th Macau Grand Prix in the Formula Masters China Series in 2013.

Thong was later signed as a junior driver with Audi Sport and competed twice in the Nürburgring 24 Hours with Audi machinery. His GT career includes winning the GT Asia championship in 2016, securing the GT World Challenge Asia Silver Cup title in 2017, and finishing runner-up in the Asian Le Mans Series LMP3 category.

During a four-year stint racing in Japan, Thong competed full-time in the Super GT300 class while also claiming the Super Taikyu GT3 Class title in 2020. He also became the only Malaysian driver to win the demanding SuperTec Fuji 24 Hours twice, in 2020 and again in 2022. Last season he returned to the GT World Challenge Asia championship and secured his second Silver Cup title since 2017.

Thong also brings direct experience from the Thailand Super Series, where he finished runner-up in the 2023 GTM Pro Class, an advantage that could prove useful for the Malaysian squad.

Weiron Tan, also 31, built his early reputation in karting where he claimed multiple championship titles between 2007 and 2010. He went on to win the 2011 Lotus Supercup GT4 Series before becoming the first Malaysian driver to win a race in the United States and the first to claim victory on an oval circuit during the 2015 Pro Mazda Championship, finishing fourth overall that season.

Tan later moved into endurance racing, competing in the 2016 Asian Le Mans Series in an LMP prototype before stepping into GT competition. His subsequent appearances include the 2017 China GT Championship GT3 class, the 2018 FIA World Endurance Championship, and the 2019 GT World Challenge Asia Series. He also served as an Audi Sport Asia works driver and was previously part of the Caterham F1 Junior Development Driver programme.

The youngest member of the team is Putera Adam, a graduate of the Toyota GAZOO Racing Malaysia Young Talent Development Program. His move into GT4 racing is part of an initiative aimed at creating a long-term pathway for promising Malaysian drivers.

At just 19 years old, Putera Adam made history in 2025 by becoming the first Malaysian and Asian driver to win the overall PRO class title in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe Championship. He is also among the four drivers in the line-up who previously competed in the Thailand Super Series, where he won a race in the GTC Class in 2023.

Completing the line-up is Nazim Azman, 24, who has already spent two seasons racing in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia series in 2023 and 2024. His international racing career began in Italian Formula 4 in 2018, before progressing to the British Formula 3 Championship in 2019 and 2020.

In 2021 he moved into the Euroformula Open Championship, finishing fourth overall in his rookie season before earning a promotion to the FIA Formula 3 Championship, further building his experience in international motorsport.

While expectations naturally come with a line-up combining established racers and young talent, TGR Racing Malaysia has taken a measured approach for its first Thailand Super Series campaign. The team’s focus is on preparation, learning and building the foundations needed to become a genuine contender in the championship over time.

Another objective is knowledge transfer, with Malaysian personnel working closely alongside experienced Japanese engineers and operations staff to strengthen local motorsport expertise.

The Thailand Super Series season begins with pre-season testing scheduled for 22–23 April at Chang International Circuit in Buriram, Thailand. The opening round will take place at the same venue from 21–24 May.

Round two will be held from 1–5 July as part of the 10th anniversary of the Bangsaen Grand Prix international street racing festival in Chonburi. The championship then moves to Petronas Sepang International Circuit for rounds three and four on 21–23 August and 18–20 September respectively, before the season finale returns to Chang International Circuit from 30 October to 1 November.
